I recently made the upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. Now, when I play games within Steam (so far the only 2 I've tried this with are KF and Team Fortress 2) I randomly get disconnected from servers.

It frequently happens with Killing Floor and occasionally happens with TF2. At first I thought it might have been because of the strain that servers were under from the free play weekend for KF, but I don't get these random disconnects when I boot to my Windows XP partition and play from there.

Is there something I need to do to prevent this or is it just another one of those "wait for Microsoft to release a patch" things?

Sounds like your loosing either your network connection or your internet connection with your ISP.
The problem and solution would lie in the reason or details about why or what is happening when you get disconnected.

What? Timeouts? Or you have been disconnected? Check to see if you have an active internet connection at the time.

The Hosted servers don't take any strain from these updates, other than the normal usage and in/out of players. Required Updates and DLC Content are provided by Steams servers and not the servers you play on.

No, I doubt a patch would fix this, I am still running a pre-release copy of WIN7 Ultimate (x86 Build 7100) and have been for the last few months without a problem.

It sounds like your wireless adapter is going into power saving mode or possibly just bad/unsupported wireless/nic drivers in general that are causing the temporary network dropouts.

You could always try disabling IPv6 too, but it shouldn't be causing these problems.

Your internet connection has little if anything to do with what operating system you are running.

May actually be the driver of your internet connection. If you have Nvidia nForce, yep. Also are you going through a router?

I'm not losing my internet/network connection. When I get these disconnects I'm on google talk chatting with my girlfriend. I don't hear any breaks in our conversations.

I'm playing the game, killing specimens. Without warning, the main menu will just suddenly appear and I will have lost connection with the server I was last playing on.

K.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro (x64, not sure of the build since I'm posting this from work). I acquired it through MSDNAA about a week and a half ago.

I don't have wireless internet. My home network is wired with Cat 5e. It could be a bad NIC driver that Windows 7 auto detected, however. I have an EVGA mobo that uses nVidia nForce drivers.

You could always try disabling IPv6 too, but it shouldn't be causing these problems.
I don't think it would cause those problems either.

I know this. I was thinking more along the lines of the servers detecting something about my OS as being a false positive and auto kicking me.

I do have nVidia nForce. Windows 7 auto detected and auto downloaded drivers for it when I first installed it. Is there an updated driver I need to download?

Also, yes. I'm going through a router at home. All the proper ports are opened and TCP/UDP is enabled over those ports.
