As title says...

What is SpeedTree? It isn't tree on speed :)P) but technology used in Unreal 3.X engine to generate real time solution for animating wind-blown trees, lush jungles, thick forests etc.

Trees and grass here looks decent (i believe its alpha version only), but will they be animated (wind blow effect)?

the trees in HOS look a lot like speedtree trees and since speedtree has a "wind-maker"( you can animate the wind blow effect in speedtree) and UE3 supports the whole speedtree magic... so i dont see a reason why HOS shouldn't make use of it

thx to UDK and speedtree you will be able to do your own trees ..(thats what i hope)

Speedtrees are fairly well optimized generally speaking, they have multiple LOD models and then finally a 2d billboard (which is only two triangles). For example, Oblivion uses Speedtree extensively, and these days it runs fairly well.

At least in UDK there's no way to have dynamic shadows from trees unless you disable static lighting for them, which in turn disables all the goodness that lightmass does (indirect lighting etc etc), or turn on whole scene dynamic shadows. But that can make your FPS plummet, because then there's no way to disable dynamic shadows for other objects that won't benefit from it.

But I agree, moving shadows from swaying trees sure look awesome.

There are screens from such games like Batman, Dragons Age, Fallout 3, GTA4 etc.

Hardware req isn't so bad, same as in games above I mentioned.
