How is it retarded?

It's faster and leaves you with a good idea of how much ammo you have left. Otherwise you'd be carrying around a bunch of half-loaded clips.

Without some kind of source I find it hard to believe that "everybody did it."

Like I said I'm sure it was done by somebody at some point for whatever reason. Just because it's possible. What I'm concerned about is how you're making it sound like everyone did it all the time, meaning it happened enough to be added as a feature in ROHOS.

The reason I find it hard to believe is because I've honestly never heard of this practice before. And common sense tells me that if soldiers were drilled and trained for marksmanship that they wouldn't have instructors telling them to keep stuffing ammo into their bolt rifle at every opportunity. Knowing how much ammo you have left is just as vital as having ammo in the first place.

Standard riflemen aren't supposed to be snipers. Obviously, compared to an SMG and whatnot they are far more accurate, but the Mosin Nagant of the 40s is the AK of today.

If you are about to enter a room with a bolt action rifle (which they did all the time), then it would be common sense to top off the rifle.

Just like soldiers change magazines when they are about to enter a new room/area with an AK, M4 ect.

You never want to be caught in a situation where you are under fire and out of ammo.

It would take a while to do so, but it is better than nothing. Because it takes a long time, I doubt it would be used a lot. Especially since this means you will eventually be reloading from half clips, which will take a long time.

Would you start an assault for a building if you knew you only had one bullet left?

And there is the other part to take notice of even if it wasnt realistic to fillup your weapon. People now fire their last 2 rounds just to reload again, that is more unrealistic than topping off.

Well what's to stop the guy from just ejecting that 1 round and putting 5 in?

If you're shooting at people and you have less than a full magazine, you've already begun the "assault."

A sketchy situation for anyone with a bolt rifle, charging into a building where you know you're likely going to need to shoot more than 2 people is a bad idea at best. In fact it would be the last thing I'd do before someone with a SMG or something.

Know your role. I'd feel safer fixing bayonets than depending on a *fully loaded* bolt rifle indoors. Especially if you're going to be "charging" in.

Bayonets are pretty much useless, like in real life. Good for a last resort, but position yourself not to need to use a last resort.
