A) steam downloads workshop maps without you having to even open the game. That's correct. 30 seconds perhaps, but almost two minutes? Then if the next few maps in cycle are more custom maps, you add more time in total of waiting. 1% a second is as fast as it goes. Sometimes it's much longer. If the map switches before I finish downloading (I join in late) then it goes all screwy.
When I have around 2.5 hours a week to play a game, every minute counts.
Again, not my problem. Make the download and workshop systems better so I can get everything downloaded at once and leave it over night with no errors or halting due to one map bugging up, then I'd consider changing my ways.
Until then, I'll stick to stock maps or play something else.
B) You can just leave your game on the custom map server for a few hours while you are away. All the maps will download themselves and you won't need to worry (barring autokick, but even then just go to a custom server that doesnt have autokick).
Try living in Australia, it takes me at least 10 minutes at least to download most maps, and no I can't just 'upgrade my ISP', I'm on the best one there is, but I do it anyway because people put a lot of time and effort into these maps, and the feedback you can generate helps their chances of making the map in the official game so that everyone can enjoy it. Only games with good, supportive communities stand the test of time.
