Why is the game size so big and the developers don't do anything about it?

Game sizes vary greatly, but the biggest resource use for most games is in the art, such as: Model, textures, geometry for maps, etc.

These things are compressed in the client builds that players use, in the dev builds where they are not compressed the sizes are much greater and the games can be a hundred and 50 + gigs where the release versions are about 1/3rd of that.

yeah I totally agree. especially when it comes to the overall experience like NPCs having unpredictable movements and such will actually increase the file size. also audio/soundtracks seem to play a big part on the size of a game
