Why is the crossbow so unrealistic?

It is unrealistic because this is an unrealistic game

to note, sure a rocket should (in reality) do more damage than a bolt from a crossbow but think about this........no average human being is going to:

A.) be able to reload the LAW as easily as they can in game
B.) be able to carry 12 rockets on their back (in addition to the LAW)

simple fact is that KF is a zombie killing game and while weapons and gameplay attempt to be "realistic", it's already an unrealistic game to begin with.

Yes.

I don't see how one can call a Zombie / clone outbreak 'unrealistic'.
Real, as in real life.
There is no such thing, yet the Xbow does exist, so one can compare it to it's real life counterpart.

Didn't say it would. Just said if one of the two were somehow to happen, that a genetic experiment outbreak would be more plausible, but yes, extremely unlikely to occur.

Oh hell my response was nothing in amount of words. I could have even researched it.

EDIT: Yomommassis, you really think so? If you're right S############ we are all doomed.

Oh, dear. What a hilarious thread. Anyway, I think the specimen head explodes because of a critical headshot, not because it is a crossbow of doom. It is just easier to tell a critical headshot apart from a normal hit by brains flying all over the place instead of specimen falling over. :p

But yeah, it is only a game. Just deal with it :D

I'm pretty sure most people who have a decent understanding of genetics would find the zombie - or really any magic - explanation more plausible for something like the zeds.

(also cf. the background text for Farm - their presence affects the entire land??? I suppose it could be that they're just eating everything and accelerating desertification but that wouldn't explain the plants that are clearly still there...)

Here is what I added in the crossbow I never released, bolt drop, less speed, pins specimens to wall behind em, less damage, less headshot damage multiplier, reduced weight by 1 and thats about it. I also added nightvision but that didn't work out to well ;D

wtfmod has a better crossbow.

Regarding the realism of the reloading, although KF might still be a little over generous, I think it is easier than suggested by YoYo due to some kind of assist mechanism in modern design. Maybe someone look it up on wiki and confirm.

Crossbow makes no sense whatsoever. I'd very much like to see it replaced by a single-shot .50 BMG rifle that echoes around the level when you fire.

I'd rather have the arbitrary, idiomatic, even whimsical crossbow over yet another lame-o .50 BMG rifle every other FPS ever in the universe has these days.
Maybe not replace the crossbow with a .50 cal, but at least give some other guns scopes. The only weapon with a scope being the crossbow is really depressing.

All of the weapons are unrealistic. Once a certain level of realism is introduced, going past that reduces the enjoyment level dramatically.

That being said another way to nerf the xbow that I wouldn't mind, is to make the xbow reload a second or two and the player can not reload on the run. They have to be stationary and use a stirrup.

In real life of course an xbow bolt wouldn't travel through all specimens until it hit a wall. But don't underestimate the power of a razor tipped bolt fired from a 150 lb. pull xbow. Unless it hits bone, that bolt will go through body after body after body and so on. And if it hit a bone it would shatter it and keep going in another direction.

The only weapon with a scope being the crossbow is a refreshing break from the bog-standard "sniper rifle" boogums, is entirely consistent with the fact that 99.9999% of engagements are at ranges that would never call for scopes, and is a good balance between having at least one easy-to-use precision weapon and retaining the function of the ironsights.

@nutterbutter: Interesting idea, but whether you automatically reload on another pressing of the attack button could spell the difference between a very noticeable game changer and "you'll never see this weapon in a pub".

EDIT: @bswearer: I disagree and think the timing is just fine. :D
