Classic mode was hailed before its release (by those in the community who insisted upon its inclusion)as the mode that would bring all the old players flooding back.
In fact it seems the old players have gone AWOL..lol

Realism and Action mode are far more popular and are winning RO2 a lot of new fans.
Classic mode is a fair game but for me personally realism is the real deal.

+1 Agreed.

Hmm, I only play classic. I have the server filter set permanently to filter out servers not running classic. My issue is the lack of custom-map servers!

Maybe I should try out realism?

If you are looking for custom maps, just turn off all the filters then sort by map name. Its really easy to find those servers then...

There is always a chance that some people still have server browser issues. I say that because if I refresh the list if I think it is slow coming up, it sometimes comes up incomplete compared to the previous refresh.

Ex: Weekend, first refresh, no filters, sort by player numbers. The page is filled with full servers and many more almost full if you scroll down. If you hit refresh too often or too quickly it sometimes comes up with an incomplete list like happened to me once yesterday. On second refresh the list came up incomplete with some full servers, then at the bottom of the page (no scrolling!), servers with just one or two players. So I went from nearly 2000 players to about 300 in a matter of minutes.

Classic is currently the only way to play this game on a level playing field (no gimmicky CoD-like perks and unlocks) but the mode is somewhat crippled by viciously overdone stamina drain and the map balance is out of whack. (In fact it appears that zero thought had been put into how altered dynamics would affect map design, it’s as if TWI thought that because the changes were universal that everything would be self-levelling. This to me exemplifies TWI’s attitude toward the players of RO2’s predecessors: indifference.) Most Roosters relish the idea of a good, hard fight but even a half-way competent defence can render some maps all but impenetrable, and that wears thin rather rapidly.

There is also the small point that there are many Roosters who have dumped RO2 and will probably never be tempted back (some remain but most of the old names and almost all of the old clans have gone); for some RO2 was nothing short of insulting. (Personally, I’d say that it being an insult is probably taking things a little too far but I did feel completely left out in the cold when RO2s horribly ‘accessible’ game play ruined everything I hoped it would be. Classic was just too little, too broken, and too late IMO. Already history has been re-written blaming the Roosters for Classic mode even after TWI said that it was always on the cards.) This is the main reason why I suspect Classic mode isn’t working out too well and why TWI should probably give up the pretence of giving a monkeys about what made RO:Ox great and focus on providing new content for the ‘Realism’ folks. The competitive scene for RO2 is dead and gone so there’s no need to be worried about that any longer.

Some may, and do, cry out ‘good riddance!’ to the people who no longer play RO2 but such reactions strike me as being rather short-sighted and blind to the fact that RO2 simply cannot afford to junk large lumps of its former fan base, particularly when In Country and Rising Storm come onto the scene. Accepting that these impressive mods may succeed in tempting back some of the disenfranchised, it would be na

The slow Run and Stamina is what keeps me away from classic.
I move like I'm sinked an inch deep in a wet concrete floor.
And it feels like I'm tired after a 1o meter run.

So I prefer Realism....

I love Classic mode, but if I could change just one thing it would be to increase Stamina, and maybe even the running speed a bit. I think TWI lowered it a bit too much in order to be different from Realism. But to be fair to them, it was based on initial feedback during the Beta.

Exactly why I don't play Classic. They should make the speed and stamina similar to Realism, maybe a little less than Realism, but still. The low speed especially sucks on Mamayev because you are such an easy target while running slow in the open, not to mention, your weapon needs 0.2 seconds to start aiming after sprint. It's a death sentence most of the time.

i think one problem with classic was that everybody was posting their preferences in the beta forums without playing it enough (the beta servers were near empty most of the time except when twi announced some sort of event).
everybody had played realism before, some more, some less, so it was easier to tweak in the first place, because people knew what they were talking about.
i remember posting "play the f*cking beta!" several times, the usual answer i got was "i can't be bothered to download 4gb every two weeks, so i'll see how it turns out in the end". not testing and still voting on the several polls hurt the balance. so it's just natural the mode didn't live up to it's expectations, some further tweaking may improve that. (before the goty update i expected the action-realism-classic ratio to be something like 20%-40%-40%.)

Is this your criticism, that running in the open in Stalingrad gets you killed?

Ooh and I forgot to mention that I won't demand or hope for anything to change in Classic. Its just I prefer Realism but would join a Classic server
if its full and running a nice map.

Running in the open is usually a death sentence in Realism mode too if you haven't thought out your move ahead of time. You need to know where your cover will be and where you will be taking fire from. All it takes is one bullet. It's especially dangerous if the enemy has an MG set up.

The movement speed of the classic mode is still perfect!

Maybe a little bit more stamina. but the speed is perfect.
Of course you can run faster, but you are no soldier of WWII.
You have enough sleepm, you have enough food, you have no enemy who have to kill you because you wear another uniform.

Classic is the mode which earned the name Red Orchestra 2 :D
(all others are Kindergarten)

this is why we can't have nice things. this kind of attitude drives more players away from classic than it attracts. i'll gladly stick to the kindergarten rather than the retirement home.

My opinion below:

- In RO1, it all fits together. For example, take a distance of 200m.

1) 200m seems further away because there is no zoom
2) 200m seems longer because you move slower
3) 200m seems further away with regards of how it is out of reach of the smg's, due to their increased recoil

The combination of 1), 2) and 3) create a believable (albeit not strictly realistic) environment:
You can pretend 200m is in fact 400m (for example) and it all fits:
1) Walking that distance takes the same time as walking 400m,
2) Looking at that distance feels the same as looking at an object 400m away,
3) Shooting at an object at that distance with an smg feels like it is 400m away and thus, out of reach for an smg
-> It works and you have great gameplay, pixel hunting and all.

- Now we have Classic, where 1) and 3) are taken away, but 2) remained.
So now we no longer have that sweet 1) - 2) - 3) combination and the illusion breaks: it suddenly becomes painfully obvious that you are moving terribly slow.

And THAT is why I prefer Realism over Classic in it's current form. Once they get that 1) - 2) -3) combination back, I will like it all over again (in addition to Realism), just like I liked previous RO's.
