This man speaks truth.
Spare me the "the people have decided" sermon. As much as people take issue with "wasted dev time on Classic" (a fallacy, to be sure), the mode still isn't fully refined yet. I love Classic and play it almost exclusively, but even I can completely see why people are turned off by the movement issues.
On the other hand, the movement and speed in Realism Mode is instead too twitchy and fast which for me ruins the experience. In Classic its too low but it do slows down the gameplay to a more realistic level. Regarding recoil and sway its too low in Realism Mode. Not because its set at a realistic level in Classic but with lack of feeling for weight of each weapon, and with no aim- and deadzone, there is no learning curve at all to master each weapon.
.
A lot of the maps seem poorly made for the new movement speeds, with cover being too far apart. I die far more often in Classic mode just trying to get out of spawn than I do in Realism. But then again, I haven't really gotten back into my groove yet.
Cover should never be constructed in a convenient ways anyway. It should not even be considered; the map should just be built and then the player should just just have to adapt. The tunnelshooter concept just makes the maps more unrealistic imo.
In general, if Classic was the core mode maybe more people whould play it. The fact that Realism Mode is called just that - brings some people to play it. When the development of Classic started, and in the beginning when there was a lot of polls regarding realism and gameplay, a lot of people were involved. In one thread 800+ people had voted. There was a huge amount of threads and posts. I think many people was sure that Classic would bring old players back including myself. Now, these people are not present. They are not playing the game. I honestly don't know why and I there is certainly not one answer to it.
Still, Classic Mode is not completed. At least not in my opinion. In the future, the ability to enter and exit vehicles must be present aswell as bigger and open map design that does not only increase the freedom of engagement for infantry, but also for tanks. So its not the like future is sealed or something.
Its sad to see that Action Mode is popular though.
It's easy for people to say:
What does it matter? You can still play the mode you prefer. Well it sounds good on paper but it ain't that simple. Look at Splinter Cell, ofp, ghost recon. This ''choice'' gets diluted more and more for every game that is released. If the core of the game gets based on that sort of stuff it's going to affect the game as a whole. At least for those who take note of it. If we're thinking long term, this might just mean that the niche minority get the short end of the stick. The fact that TWI took this step with RO2 worries me.
But I'm quite used to get ignored and kicked around. I'm a part of a minority, and the minority is useless and should be thrown in the trashcan. The only company that blindly cater to their core fans is Bohemia Interactive and they've done that for a decade. I hope TWI do the same.
No matter if Classic is popular or not atm, it boost my effect for TWI a lot and it brought my faith back, especially with the knowledge that they wont just drop support like most gaming companies. With Rising Stom and custom made maps, and future tweaks and fixes for realism mode, it does at least sound very, very positive.
