Is a shame really, since there are some really good maps out there. Although I have to admit I do prefer to play in the maps I consider "cannon" as opposed to those that are their own individual story.

This goes for the likes of Departed, Icebreaker and Filths Cross.

Great maps, no question, I just don't play them as much as I probably should because I'm a stickler for the KF storyline as I see it. :)

Cause they finally learned them, and they sure they can level on it and get sexy achievements.

I think only 10% of community knows about whitelist. Also once player learned a few maps, and knows it from inside to outside, it much easier to call tactics and "bug" a few places ^___________________^ (Have you noticed how kf-biohazard trader exploit famous now?!) (or hospital horrors exploits!?, those just honeypot for kids)

People also lazy to try something new.

1: Because many maps get removed from the whitelist and, as stated, most people don't know how to tell.

2: Even if it is whitelisted, there are a lot of maps that aren't.. well, good. Maybe they've gotten bad first impressions by Doom or something.

3: It's slightly too complicated to download the maps for most people, unless they're joining a server hosting it.

4: It's also more effort to host a server than most people are willing to put in, meaning they must find a public dedicated one with (or without) map voting and a rotation of custom maps.

5: There's, what, ~20 official maps now? How do you know they're just playing west london repeatedly? Sure, it used to be like that, and some servers run west london 24/7, but new players PROBABLY haven't even played it before. It's on the bottom of the maplist alphabetically too. Hell on Earth? A lot of the maps are simply extremely difficult, whether the difficulty is artificial or not. West London is a nice break.

6: Maybe people actually like the map. I can certainly see why, as it's one of the few made by Tripwire.

Personally I used to hate Offices when it was just one of five choices, but a while ago I started playing the more 'cramped' maps. Admittedly I think I learned every weapon and ammo spawn in a couple weeks of playing it rarely, but to me it IS almost new.

Camping the first floor is boring. Always.

well, back in the day before the whitelist got revamped and a exploit team was made, we uploaded over 100 maps to our server, and tested them for about 8 hours straight, only doing a few rounds of each map, or enough to get the gist of it and rate it.
we picked all the maps that we thought were great.
then they started getting dewhitelisted, most werent put back on because the mappers were working on new stuff and didnt want to be bothered, so now we just run doom2 on all our servers, cause we dont have to worry about if maps get dewhitelisted (we already have doom2v8 for when v7(we did all the new versions) gets dewhitelisted) we dont have the time anymore to babysit the maplist while at the same time babysitting our FF servers all the while working jobs and doing family stuff.
so if you run a server you have to dedicate a lot of time to it depending how it is set up, since all the ons and offs of the whitelist, we now just stay with an easy to deal with map.

I'd say that at least part of the reason the stock maps get the nod is some players may have enough of an internet connection to play, but not enough to download a user-made map in time to make the start of Wave 1. And, God forbid everyone wait 90 seconds or so before starting.

How many user-made maps is someone expected to have locally on their system? To be sure, there are some that seem to be in "heavy rotation," but how long will it be before there is an outcry that even those are being chosen too often?

And, a significant part of this problem is that as long as we have this nonsense of maps with filenames like KF-The Calls Are Coming From Inside The House! V2.11 Fixed MOD Night Rev1.3, the task of keeping your Maps folder up-to-speed is almost approaching a second occupation. I get that if one is a KF fanatic, you should do some regular whitelist housekeeping. Problem is, everyone you encounter online isn't a KF fanatic.

Stock maps tend to lag less graphically then user created maps, for low end PC's aswell. I know i can only play on certain maps without my graphics taking a beating even on lowest settings...

if KF would include filters for both solo and multiplayer for Whitelist, greylist and non whitelisted maps it would work alot better.

i downloaded the doom map for my fiance to practice on (new to FPS games) took me 4 differnt tries to find the correct version that was whitelisted. (one of those going from the link on the forum WASNT the current white listed version)

also why are the map downloads from servers temporary? i remember back in the day Unreal Tourny used that method but why does KF? can i at least have the option for the download to be permanent? so i wouldnt have to worry about downloading them individualy

the maps are in your cache directory, open up cache.ini and rename the corresponding mapname to cache file.

the reason that it doesnt download directly into your maps directory as a map, is if your connection is lost or the download screws up, then the game will crash(it says overheating or something) until you delete the broken map file.

Stock maps have collision disabled on almost everything and they place blocking volumes are those meshes, they also turn off colision and shadows and decals, foliage and stuff you see on the ground. User built maps often don't have these features because either the person making the map doesn't know about optimization or they are lazy.

I'm going to vomit if I see another hell on earth game being played in London or the Office.

I know what you are saying. I've played so many maps on biotics lab and mountain pass it makes me sick. People like the comfort of knowing that they can win.

I play whatever whitelist maps the server provides. When I get all my perks to 6 I'll probably branch out to as many maps as I can get my hands on.

Which is why i never see ESL any more.

Except for yesterday, which is an exception to the rule as it's not a pub game.

Pubs run easy maps, perhaps this is the rule to how the world works.

Because it's easier to spamclick on one of the 20 WestLondon servers in the browser than it is to click on 1 Mansion or whatever.

Much, much easier.

And then when it comes to vote it turns out whatever server I ended up in doesn't have customs anyways.

Only real option available is to wait a minute for the server list to finish updating, favourite the custom maps and pray they're up next time you want to play.

And, of course, they never are.

Just because it's whitelisted doesn't mean it's a good map. There have been so many bad, poorly-thought-out maps that I tend to avoid most custom maps in general and play maps I know I'll have fun on.

Most servers I play on that include custom maps tend to include craptastic ones, like Defense, tons of variations on Defense, some map where you're in a Desert, a daytime version of Farm (This makes me immediately leave the server, BTW), and other crap that tends to be even easier and less-atmosphereic than the stock stuff.

There are some good servers with custom, whitelisted maps, but these are the exception rather than the rule, so I tend to stick with stock maps.

Even though it is waaaaaaaay too easy, I kinda like arcade gas station.

I almost never play sharpshooter, so I enjoy sitting on top of the gas station and picking off specs with the lever action. Its kind of a nice reprieve from my usual medic or firebug exploits.

Now that I think about it, I like the custom maps that make me play outside of my comfort zone and use different perks. I'll have to look for more like that.
