So there I was running up the left side of the factory on Red Oktober when I saw a Russian crouch sprint into cover. I was at full sprint myself, so I expected him to start shooting at me soon, but not immediately.
I guess that unlike me, he wasn't using the time he had while moving to search for threats, so he must have never seen me. Either that or he assumed I hadn't seen him. I kept running forward to the best cover I had and went prone, waiting to have a shoot-out with this guy, because I couldn't move safely.
I waited:
He's over behind those pipes somewhere. He ran in from the left over the top of the hill (dumb mistake) and stopped right there. Maybe he crawled away? Maybe he's doing the same thing I am and we can't see each other. Something has to change. One of us has to find the other and kill him first, or be the one getting killed.
Problem solved. Did he ever know I was there? Who knows. I knew
he was there, and it cost him his life. I had more than enough time to grenade him, or even to flank round behind him and bayonet him, especially if he hadn't seen me. If he had crawled even 5m to the right of where I last saw him, my grenade would have done nothing but give away how close I was. I got this kill because he did something dumb. It took no skill at all. I just followed a few simple rules, and he died.
Never assume you are safe where you are and the enemy doesn't know. Always look for better cover closer to the enemy, and move there. Only stop in one place long enough to look for enemies, engage them, look for new cover and go. If you come under fire of any sort, move as soon as you can. If you even suspect the enemy sees you move, move as soon as you can.
Your life depends on it.
To camp a location move around the area, trying not to use the same cover twice. Move 3m this way, then 5m that, floating around the area you want to occupy. This helps you to dominate a larger area and also to see into dead ground like behind that pipe.
Don't be afraid to pull back if you think too many enemies have too many angles to shoot at you from. Push forward whenever possible, even when camping an objective. If you keep pushing forward, defending one objective turns into capping the next.
Another option I had was to assume he is looking to my right towards the objective and run over to the left to get a better angle on him. I might see him facing the other way and be able to bayonet charge or shoot him safely. I had already contemplated that, because moving to get a better angle is always the smart option, but I also thought I might be able to get him with a grenade. 36m is pushing it, the grenade actually detonated at the height of the pipe so I assume it landed on top.
My plan, once I had not seen him move again, was to throw the grenade and see if that made him move (that's why I'm in iron sights) if it didn't, then I would assume he was still there but aware of my presence and move over to my left and forward, going prone every few metres to throw off his aim and see if I could get the shot.
When you move
always use that time to locate the enemy, starting with anyone shooting at you, and moving outwards. You should already know exactly where you are going to go into cover before you move, and do not change your mind. Indecision gets you killed. When I saw that guy, I had already intended to go prone where I ended up. There was no need to change that plan and so I carried it out. I got the kill, he got killed.
One last thing. Never use the cover you just killed an enemy in. Say you run into a room and bayonet someone, do not stay. Leave the room and find somewhere to watch for enemies coming to his aid. If I had run over and gone behind that pipe after this, his whole team could know where I was. Not fun, considering how easy it is for them to approach. But if I move a little to my left into some better cover, I might be able to kill some more of them while they are still trying to figure out where I was.
There is also the little matter of my two squad mates nearby. One of them might be throwing a grenade or still firing on that location. Best not to go there.
This is what it means to use good individual and small unit tactics.
