If there really was a German coming around a corner, you probably wouldn't even manage to be able to point the rifle at him indoors.

This sounds harsh, but I'd be all for adding this to the stickied list of Worst Suggestions: Look Here Before Posting.

I agree!
people watch to many movies also in rl its about your life even if you would be able to point the rifle in the direction in those milliseconds its highly likely that you would miss.
Doesnt maybe dropping the rifle once you see or even hear an unexpected enemy soldier and drawing your side arm seem like the more natural reaction? (for a trained soldier atlast.)

...I am not even sure why this question would be asked.

Because doing so would knock you on your arse, and you would not hit anything.

How about INSTEAD of uselessly hipfiring that 7 foot AT gun- They work on a way to have it re-supply its FRIGGEN ammo in a way that makes the gun less of a tedious chore to use.

3 clips worth after burning through 4 clips worth is a smack in the face... it is mostly a death sentence. It is more effecient to stand up, get shot and re-spawn than it is to crawl over to an ammo crate and resupply.

Youll be glad the rifle is 7ft. It will touch the german right in the abdomen when he comes around the corner then boom. Volley ball hole :D but ro2 doesnt register the "length" of the weapon. When you hip fire a type 38, its like hip firing a pistol. So inaccurate. Doesnt the longer the gun is the easier it is to "aim" hip fire.

It's easier to hipfire a pistol because it's more like pointing your finger. Once you have two hands on a rifle, it creates more weapon to handle, it's not as natural to 'aim' and hip fire a rifle as it is a pistol.

You'll never be able to do something like this hipfiring any rifle.

im talking about the length. The weapon is physically nearer to your target. So its pretty obvious for you to "see" if your going to hit your target than a shorter weapon.

As I said before, when carrying the PTRS:

--your hand would not be on the pistol grip, ready to fire
--you would have to aim and position a weapon almost seven feet long, weighing around fifty pounds, in the cramped quarters of a building

So sure, if your enemy was willing to cooperate, you'd have a pretty good idea of where the round would go. The German could be armed with a rock, though, and I'd overwhelmingly give him the better odds in the encounter you're proposing.

Finally, from a developer perspective, this would just be a monumentally massive waste of time given all the other improvements and new content the game could use.

Where else do they carry it then? One hand is in the handle and another in pistol grip.

At :10, you can see clearly him holding on the pistol grip and the rifle seems to be pointing relatively straight.

Its one of the limitations ingame. Longer weapons are easier to hipfire, as for RO2 hipfiring you need to imagine you extend your barrel into infinity and see where it collides with your target.

This is the reason that hipping a MG is generally way too easy, and most likely the reason why the MG's have a lot of upwards recoil when firing from the hip.

The in-game model is downsized compared to the weapons real-world length and dimensions. It is extremely impractical if not downright impossible to carry the PTRS like that in reality. Look how far away the carry handle is from the pistol grip in the first photo when compared to the person's reach.

I mean, just look at the thing.

The handle isnt too far. It just beyond the bolt. To fire it you would do it like these guys with 240s.

Notice how their hands are extended. The PTRS look a bit further than the 240s. As you can see the soldiers have their arms bent a little bit so I do think a human can reach. The only thing you need to do is push your left arm so you can make the rifle straight. the 46lb of the rifle shouldnt be too hard to push for a soldier considering its not shoulder firing. Considering what the Germans have done to their homes and families, I DEFINITELY think the soviets would do these crazy stuff to kill germans. Maybe bind a key to put the AT rifle at that position and having so, will waste stamina REALLY quick.

It is. 6'11''. almost 7 feet.

If I am not mistaken I believe the PTRS was actually carried by two soldiers IRL. One would have the barrel, the other would have the action assembly and it would have to be assembled to be fired.

I just don't think you're getting it. look at the thing! do you really think a guy could hipfire it? the Hulk would have a hard time wielding the beast!

Yes I do. Look at the mg 34. You got nowhere to hold it. But guess where your holding it by? The bipod at the END of the barrel. look at the distance from pistol grip to handle on PTRS then look the distance from pistol grip to bipod on mg 34.

yea i like how no one responded after showing you the impossibleness of holding the MG34 in-game. The mg34 has his bipod WAY farther than the Ptrs' handle.

Over here, no not there, here.
I like how noone responded because they were doing other things.
Bottum line dude:
The recoil would injure you,
The thing is just too freakin big to aim in any general direction without support.

MG-34 Hip Shooting - YouTube

prolonged fire = the barrel gets too hot = you can't hold it. but for some quick room clearing or self defense, i don't see why you couldn't use it.

i also found this demo on the mg-42 (which is slightly shorter, 1.1 vs. 1.2 meter, but still proves the point because in the second half of the video, the operator's grip is on the bipod):

MG-42 sturmfeuer (assault fire) - YouTube

the main problem regarding this entire issue is the recoil. you can manage an mg from the hip. but an at-rifle will seriously injure you if you don't stabilize it on the ground.

gameplay-wise, i don't see what the fuss is about. when i play at-rifleman, i always switch to pistol when i move through buildings, trenches and tight spots where i fear an ambush.

Wow machine guns get a pistol also no? Then why dont they use that? Incredible how Machine gunner start playing assault and smg roles by just hip firing through rooms instead of ACTUALLY as self defense.

And how much you want to bet that if you were in the Soviet shoes where you confront a german at point blank range-barrel is basically touching his stomach, you WILL shoot. Do you care that it will injure you? no. you care that you will SURVIVE. According to you we should do this when we encounter a german "oh, lol, you caught me pointing my ptrs right at you and i wont shoot because its going to hurt me really bad, just shoot me" no... YOU BLAST THAT DAM GERMAN BACK TO 1918!!!! I bet a mule kicks harder than the PTRS and the worse a mule kick is knock you down with a bruise... that certainly is better off than dieing or being POW.

Just to recap, in a life or death situation, EVERYONE will shoot

i can completely relate to this way of thinking but in this case it's simply not practical. in real life i'd imagine an at-soldier dropping that monstrosity of a weapon right on the ground and pulling out his sidearm as fast as humanly possible. because it's quicker and far more reliable in the sense that you'll actually hit something. and not injure yourself as an inevitable side-effect.

edit: but yeah, in-game, it HAS been frustrating to meet an mg-gunner with superb aim over and over again in room-to-room fighting. but what can be done? maybe they could add some more recoil if the mg is not stabilized on a firm base?
