OK, I know little about tweaking or spec or indeed anything apart form getting regularly shot on RO2, but for me it seems to be running really badly and, what's worse given that situation, it looks terrible, way worse than RO1. The other players look like ghosts, divorced from the back ground, and nothing really makes me feel part of this world.

So my question is, given my spec, what kind of settings am I going to have the most joy with? I try a bit of this and a bit of that and it never seems to do much, so given that I don't really know what anti aliasing is, I thought I'd ask here.

I'm using an Acer laptop
windows 7 64 bit
intel core 2 duo T6600 2,2ghz
4096 mb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M

Any thoughts on what's the best way I can set this to get a) a decent game and b) a decent game that looks better than RO1 would be be extremely graftefully received. Otherwise I kind of feel I might as well go back to Darkest Hour (if anyone's still there now this is out).

I hate to tell you mate, but your CPU is far far far too underpowered to play this game.

You'r probably going to need to get a whole new system

You might want to look at an AMD 1090T Hexa core, 4-8 gigs ram, and something around a 6870 .

I'm sure the T6600 is definitely not THAT old, however it doesn't even meet the minimum specs for the game.

The only advice I see right now is for you to upgrade.

Well the laptop is just over a year old, was pretty good when I got, runs battlefield bad company like a dream, and sites like can i run it all said I'd have no trouble with HOS, yet it runs and plays like absolute s**t.

Great, thanks for lying to me Can You Run It, which consistently tells me my machine is a 'pass'.

Time to start saving I guess.

Can You Run It should never be used as an exact estimation of anything, it just crunches some number and gives you an advice.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 should not be used as a measurement, nor should Crysis or any other game you have in mind.
Red Orchestra 2 is a 2011 game and you should treat it like one.

Bad Company 2 doesn't even have half the detail that RO2 does, it just overcompensates with bloom, shaders and of course the entirely oversensitive destruction system.

I run it on what I consider to be an equally antiquated laptop: dv6-1132sa :s

I get away with medium with the following changes:

shadows & lighting: low

untick everything at the bottom

lower aa if needed [low for me]

Post Processing: lower than enhanced, can't remember if medium sets this higher [too much tweaking[

I have also followed most of the general tweaks and texture steaming pool size tweaks

its not great, 20-40fps max unless I'm staring at the floor but got it refurbed about 16months ago @

I'm getting anywhere between 15 (15!) and 25. So barely playable to awful.

I know it's no use to compare other games, but what bugs me is that so many other recent games play not just well but really well on my laptop and this just drags along. What also annoys me is that I don't really care about any of the other games, I just like RO.

If you actually ran the frostbite engine on full you would know it looks far better than the majority of game engines on the market.

I have a high end PC and I am able to run it on the very highest and still keep 60 FPS easily.

For the sake of the argument I will differentiate graphics from aesthetics to be more clear.

Bad Company 2 =
-Good graphics, though it uses way too much bloom.
-Aesthetics, an absolute disaster. The buildings are barely furniturised if at all.

Both graphics as well as aesthetics put load on the videocard, which is why it simply can not be compared. So even if Bad Company 2 had better graphics, it still doesn't have better aesthetics.

It's funny how I'm down-repped when it should be fairly obvious that Red Orchestra 2 has a lot more polygons to draw.

Sorry - switching everything I can off and running it in medium. Plays meh looks meh. If only I really understood what all the options were then I'd like to think I could decrease X and Y and increase Z and make it all work at least a little better.

You're on a laptop with an old processor that doesn't even meet minimum spec. There's no magic configuration in the settings that will make it run great and look better....you've got a low end CPU and POS mobile GPU. The only thing you've got plenty of is memory.

... and here's the weird thing, today, having done nothing, it suddenly started running OK. Graphics aren't great but they're good enough and I racked up 20 kills in a few rounds, so it's working well enough.

I'll still save up for a new system but for now at least I'm not shut out of the war.

Leave 1 frame thread lag ticked. This helps performance in most cases.

It separates the physics processing and graphics rendering by 1 frame, allowing the CPU to process less faster (in laymans terms).

More than the processor it's the video card. 240M ins't for this game, optimized or not.
