So, My question to the Community, mainly the clans/guilds, is whom is gonna go all for the 64 player server? That ****e is gonna be hella costly like 80$ min/monthly. But omg the FUN!!!:IS2:

Well, of course your average 10 guy competetive clan won't have much incentive to put up the dosh for a 64 player server, but many large clans will. :)

The 10-78 clan has it's own gaming box, we'll have several of them up!

several? hardly. You might want to wait for the exact specs on the server requirements, but an "own gaming box" probably doesnt qualify for "several" 64slot servers.

lets all pray for a minimum amount of "server admins" thinking there mediocre hardware can handle multiple resource greedy servers, best several tanks only servers..

Think again:

. Our Gaming server is located in Chicago:

. 2 dual xeons
. Dual 2.33Ghz L5410 12MB Cache Xeon (Quad Core)
. 8 GB Ram
. 2 x 1TB SATA Hard Drive Raid
. IP Addresses: 18
. Windows 2003 Server

Again I doubt the UE3 engine would end up using more than 2 cores, so in that sense you can probably run 8/2 = 4 servers.

But that 2.33 ghz is going to hold you back as there will always be a single thread that holds everything back. Unless TWI does some magic to the UE3 engine. So in that sense my expectation is that you can end up running 4x 40 player servers but not a 60 player server without severe lag to the players.

Especially if TWI keeps the 30 default tickrate of UT3.

From what i recall TWB had similar hardware (Xenon 5460) and ran a 60Slot Ostfront server from it. Not sure how many servers they ran, but they still didnt move to 64slots (from what i know), despite the game, in theory, being able to handle it.
With HoS running on multiple threads, i guess the number of servers along with the increased requirements would lower the amount of slots and servers that hardware could run.
But well, i guess we will see. Just my estimation. Still doesnt make the statement any less true that too many servers cant handle their games due to admins wanting to run tons of software on them :)

Out of interest, what NICs does the server use and how many? Also, Raid 0 i presume?

Isn't the UE3 engine capable of using 8 cores? Why would RO2 not use it?

Of course we wouldn't run a laggy server, but one would think with the spec of our box we could have 2 or 3 64 players server going.

The UE3 engine can send different tasks to different cores.
Like netcode on core1 and say physics on core 2 etc.. Its just that in general it ends up that 1 big thing eats up 1 core for himself and the others can fit just nice on another single core together with room to spare.

It will even be special if the game will truly use 2 cores, most dedicated servers for other games use 1 core and often do not even support more than that, while the client versions support say 4 cores.

Clients have things like sound, Graphics, other nifty special effects, etc that can all be delegated to a core of its own. Dedicated servers generally do not even have a video card or a sound output, and generally use 1 big thread, and some smaller ones. So even though it could send all the smaller ones to different cores, its the big thread that ends up defining the maximal player amount of your server.

The key of multi core servers remains primarily the ability to host multiple servers. So I expect that the server application will use 2 cores pretty well, and would actually be pretty surprised if it would stress more than 2 cores per server.

---

So I expect that perhaps servers that could run 50 player servers well can run a 64 player server now due to the dual core ability. But its really hard to say as I've never seen any 64 player server in UT3 with actually 64 players in it. So nobody got any real reference, but UT3 servers weren't really easy on servers. In the end it will probably depend on what features twi adds to the game, and whether they are delegated to a separate thread or not.

Butch had some 'special' NICs on their "super" server. I forget the specs, but its in the RO server section somewhere.

+1
Here's to hoping over zealous server admins don't overload their servers with player numbers. Many that rent slots from GSP's forget that other games are on their box, too.

Thats a dumb question. The answer is Tripwire of course, so we can figure out what kind of hardware it takes to run one :p

I ordered our dedicated server specifically for this game. I will have a 64 slot server online, day of release. Even though the box is capable of hosting 200+ slots, in all reality, I dont see the need for more then one 64 slot server. Since I can only play on one server at a time, and the chances of acquiring 64+ members that wish to play this game is pretty nill, I just dont see the point. This is however just my opinion.

This game is being optimized to support HTT, so why any of you would think a server cant utilize all of its cores for this game, makes no sense to me.

My only hope is that there is a better admin interface. I mean the web thing is adequate, but common, this is 2010, and will be 2011 by the time we get the game. Either a real in game admin utility at release, OR someone that can design a nice mutator would be great. If there is a problem player, I want to be able to just open chat, type !b playername and they are gone. Poof, done!

At any rate, our box specs...

Dual Intel Xeon L5520 2.26Ghz (Dual CPU, Quad Core + HTT)
12GB RAM - 500GB SATAII
1000Mbit Network Port Speed
5,000GB Tier 1 Bandwidth
Windows Server 2003

More then enough horsepower to run this game. I actually quite look forward to it.

Despite the hardware configs, I just can tell it will be damn crowded, please imagine the construction hall of Krasni with an average of 40 players in it (the rest is either running into battle or just died waiting for respawn)

I cannot wait to see the amount of players wiped out by grenades in that scenario.
