YouTube - NS2 Fade Reveal

Closed beta now available to pre-purchasers plus that new trailer. Seriously, wtf is with all these great games coming out after a 4 year drought? Anyways, let me know if its good anybody who has it.

Saw that trailer too, looks fantastic, will keep an eye out for this now. Reminds me of Dead Space somehow(though of course NS was there first).

What can I say? That was my visceral reaction to the game, and it wasn't enticing enough to make me reconsider after over a year. I bought it before KF came out, and didn't look back once I could play KF.

Don't worry, its a hard game.
We will all go back to school with Game 2.

He's not cloaking, he's teleporting. There's nothing to shoot. Though the marine commander can scan using an observatory to reveal cloaked aliens (or just see any part of the map for 30 odd seconds).

Looks like the fade's blink ability is finally going to be an actual teleport again, in the first few versions it was a straight teleport to wherever you were aiming, but they changed it to flight with a buzzing sound because people were getting stuck in walls. Hopefully the fade is not so powerful as in NS, one great fade player could turn a 32 player game in a game full of average pubbers. I wouldn't say it's very cheap though, since the skill cap is out of sight.

I never played aliens much throughout NS1 for this very reason. Either you are amazing as a alien or you are a terrible one in NS1. The skill requirement for being good as a alien was easily the same as or more than required for marine commander.

No matter, I still enjoyed every second as a regular marine, racking up unbelievable amounts of kills with the pistol :p.

Too bad my rig can't handle the beta or I'd preorder immediately.

And though the trailer makes the fade look "invicible", trust me, at least in NS1, he def isn't. Fade probably requires the most skill out of ALL the possible classes, both marine and alien, in the game. Your health will drop to 0 in a split second if you're not teleporting constantly... And marines always travel in groups in the game so if you're flying around them they'll just be shooting up everything in a 360 degree circle.

On the flipside, if you're very good at fade, you can kick some serious ***. My best successes at fading (and I'm not very good), were when I had a lerk or 2 spamming poison gas onto the marines position... I swoop in take a swipe and run off. The swipe plus the gas usually will usually kill the marine I went for unless the Marine CO is really quick on the medpack requests. And then of course all the commotion gives the skulks a chance to join in the fun ;).

But one really really good fade player can play an entire 30-45 minute match, rack up 40-50+ kills and not die once. Still though, the margin of error is tiny. One mistake and you're toast, especially mid-late game when rines have shotties, HMGs and heavies.

If anyone wants to see what the gameplay is like just go download it, it's only like 125 megs IIRC. All you need is HL1 (what is it, like $2 now on steam :D?) You'll get your *** handed to you though by people who've been playing for years.

There's a very long thread in the NS2 official forums about how the game has been pushed into beta too early. Most people experience massive lag and poor performance if they can event connect to a server. There's suspicion the early beta was to gain more money to continue development. I would hold off a bit longer if you're on the fence about this one.

UWE has stated that this is a "real" beta, not what you see nowadays where a beta is released only a few months from release. NS2 is likely to be six months or more away from release. UWE is a small studio and they need lots of testers, with many different PC configs, so they can start bug hunting sooner rather than later. Anyone who buys the game gets early access to an unfinished product which in no way reflects what the state of the final release version will be like.

From Wikipedia:

Beta

Beta is feature and asset complete version of the game, when only bugs are being fixed.[120][121] This version contains no bugs that prevent the game from being shippable.[120] No changes are made to the game features, assets, or code. Beta occurs two to three months before code release.[121]

That's been the generally accepted state of a beta for awhile, even before beta's were known as demos. There are plenty of bugs that prevent the game from being shippable. Nobody is saying this is indicative of the final product either.

I didn't exactly say I agreed with UWE's beta release, I just paraphrased what their stance was. Seems that I should just have let the devs speak for themselves.
