Here's how it looks on my screen, with bloom enabled:

All of which prompts me to comment about a point of contention that we all have to live with and something I wish could be avoided.....The ability (or necessity) to allow players to have different views and level of detail.

As it is now (with many games), the level of detail/ambiance is a matter of personal preference. Sure it irritates me that I feel I'm crawling safely concealed in grass on Arad, yet I repeatedly get taken out by players that have foliage turned off. I've learned to live with that and prefer to immerse myself in as much ambiance as my system will allow.

With the ability (or necessity) to turn off bloom/foliage/etc., the VOIP is sometimes filled with disgruntled players cursing the opposing players because they have HDR Bloom/foliage/etc turned off and have an advantage.

In response to the OP's question and as has been mentioned previously, some of the maps are fine. Some seem to be overdone. I've gotten used to it and figure it just adds to the "fog of war". I get more iritated with the concusion effects from a grenade landing 30 meters away than the new bloom.

Turn off things that hurt you competitively. If everyone can turn off the same things, there is no reason to mandate a certain configuration.

a lot of custom maps (not really the contest winners) just use the default bloom settings etc this often leads to a lot of glow espeically off the bloody tanks. Some maps really do need tweaking so the bloom is less drastic than it is atm but generally i like the new effect. Like most things though if you dont like it then turn it off...i really dont go into this whole "I play RO with everything off so i can shoot people more easily" (not that i think ive seen ne one posting that here) but to me that somewhat defeats the point of playing a realistic shooter.

For what its worth I think adding bloom defeats the purpose of a realistic shooter, but maybe that's just me (I made it a point to just about eradicate bloom in Kriegstadt). I would much rather see the game portraying a grittier experience rather than, "oh look at how pretty this glows!" Don't get me wrong, for snow maps, okay, you have you snowblind thing. But honestly I feel that the only instance in which blooming should occur is when looking in to the sun and having the light envelope your weapon. As it stands it is really just an eye candy element, in my opinion.

It just feels so...unnecessary.

True, but MuddyTigers is a custom map produced ages ago, and it never looked anything approaching 'good' to begin with. I just temporarily turn bloom off on such maps. Generally though I have no problems, most custom maps and all of the official maps are playable with bloom on on my system.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS HASN'T BEEN MENTIONED...
SCREEN SHOTS DO NOT USUALLY CAPTURE THE BLOOM EFFECT!!!!

I took that into account when I took those screenshots, and looked at them closely to see if they looked the way the screen did in game. They did. Those screenshots of mine on the previous page do contain the bloom effects. Also, you don't need to shout.

Me neither. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting people, but I figure it should look cool while I'm at it. :p

Yeah but Matty, you liked the old bloom (you must have been the only one), which made everything look blurry as hell, so I'm not surprised that you like the updated one as well. :p

I'm not one for turning things off to make it easier (like UT/Quake/generally loser type people do) but there's no way in hell I'm leaving bloom on. It seriously makes my eyes water. Some maps it's ok, but there's too many where it's not and I'm not going to turn it on and off as the maps change. It defeats the purpose.

I really do think it's funny though that a lot of people who like the bloom, blur and all, are probably running anisotropic filtering. For those who don't know what I'm getting at, they're using AF to sharpen up textures in the distance (at a performance cost) and then slapping bloom on it (another small performance cost) which blurs them up again.

Doesnt make me think my contact are drying out nearly as much as previous versions of bloom did, though it still tries its best.

I have it off, on my machine it is just intolerably bright and blury. Take Matty Dienhoffs screenshots for example, from the same position on the German side of Tula on my machine I can't even make out the bunkers across the valley, all that is there is a great big blob of white. Now that kind of variance among differing hardware set ups is for me a clear cut reason to axe it.

Also trying to aim at something at range feels like shooting with someone elses glasses on. Now with it done right and in a subtle fashion it can look good as the light has a soft and volumetric quality. However when an object you'd clearly spot in the real world is barely discernable through the blur then it is crossing into the ridiculous. Right after the update I was playing Konigsplatz and it was so blurry I could not discern people at all outside of about 40m everything was just a blury eye straining mess.

So I have it off as I always have and I frankly don't give a rats arse if someone thinks it's advantaging me over other players. I don't enjoy having to press my face to the monitor to play the game, nor have I ever been impressed with bloom or HDR in a game to date.

Oh no! I run at 800x600 resolution, please everybody turn down your resolution to match mine K thx. Uh, we are all playing the game on a PC and thus can configure things any way we please. PC's aren't consoles. Did the VOIP complainers have high voices indicating pre-teen age? Because then I can forgive their foolery, if not well....then they need to be pimp slapped, sorry.

Same here. Plus, I don't view the bloom as any more realistic. It just seems blurrier and in many cases, unnecessarily blurier. Why would my hand be blurry and glow? The human eye sees in far greater resolution and detail. All the bloom does is cover up some of the flaws in modeling (engine-wise, mind you, not the modelers' fault) by blurring things.

The ambient light can look pretty sometimes, and you might get some nice smoke effects, but generally speaking, I turn it off. I find it hurts more than it helps.

A Sniper Position Near You.
I turned bloom off the moment i saw how it looked, correct me if i am wrong. But things do not glow outside just because there is sunlight. I think the new graphics look like ****.

I thought the old bloom was fine for me. It wasn't blurry at all. The new bloom looks great. I'll post a screenshot later, but in general it's quite subtle.
