Hello everyone!

We started this week off with a bang, getting the often mentioned, ever slightly delayed SDK out the door for all users! Along with working server redirects this means players can create while server admins host and play their maps. We've already been spending some quality time with the two custom maps already released: Butovo and Ogeldow.

Remember this is a full SDK. You can make everything from maps, weapons, vehicles, the small mutators that tweak the game in some fashion, to gigantic total conversions that change everything! To take a poke yourself head to your steam Tools list and download it today! If you would just like to enjoy the creations of others, check out the modding and mapping sections of this forum and provide constructive feedback to the creators!

As some of you may have noticed in our steam OGG messages, we are playing around with the servers to test various things related to players reports on high player count/ping issues. This work will continue in the near future with more requests but we are putting pen to pad right now with what we've learned.

As to the future, we've scheduled a large content update for RO 2 similar to what you've come to expect from us in the past via RO 1 and KF. We'll be posting media and information on that as we get closer to what we feel is a comfortable release date.

We also just got done testing a Rising Storm map and things are looking good for the Pacific Front. But I suspect Tony/Nestor and the crew over at RS will be keeping you more updated on that front in the near future!

We've also been doing alot of discussion and work internally about changes to the game. This includes core game changes, UI updates and enhancements as well as the community referred to "RO Classic" mode. We feel we have a good idea on what the community as a whole would like to see out of it (and are working towards that), but we also know that everybody has different opinions as well (You should see some of our debates in the office!).

With that in mind we would like to see a focused (AND CIVIL) discussion by the community in this thread as to what "RO Classic" means to them. We know this is a subject that many people are passionate about, but play nice or you will be escorted out of the forums. :IS2: :IS2:

As a heads up I will not be in the office next week, so communication from me may be minimal at best. But I will have the mods patrolling the forums and this thread in particular. With that in mind, get your SDK grubby hands dirty and your minds thinking!

Any tutorial teaching you how to use the UE 3 editor will be helpful unless it is about functionality that has been removed/changed since the creation of the video and the build you are using.

Great stuff! cant wait till you guys figure out the ping issues. The "speed hack detected" message is still appearing, along with huge ping spikes as well. Especially on 40 or more player servers.:IS2:

Great news. Laggy game play regarding ping has kept me from launching the game a bunch of times so lets hope when its fixed will all be back on the battlefield.

For me, the only features that would have to be changed in RO2 to make it "RO classic" are:
-Longer time of aiming down the sights
-Longer time of loading the bolt action rifle
-A bit less accuracy for weapons (recoil is fine)
-Bigger maps, spawns further away
-Enterable and leaveable tanks. Just like in RO1

Rather than list all the differences between RO2 and RO1, I'll put first a list of stuff I would like changed for a classic mode, then less important stuff later:

Bolt action rifles as standard issue weapon. Map variety is important however so there should be a nice balance of gameplay types
Tactical movement so have to think about your positioning and movements. Player inertia, acceleration, deceleration, movement speed in iron sights etc.
Weapon recoil and accuracy. People should be encouraged to get close with SMG's and they should feel difficult to control. Semi's should have to wait for weapon to settle between shots
Weapon damage same or very similar to Ostfront
Hip firing. Due to speed of iron sights you should have to make a decision on whether you have time to go to iron sights or not.
No zoom
Rest weapon on terrain for increased stability. No hold breath key or heavily modified to encourage skilful/tactical use
Weapon sway or difficulty factor for long range shots
More noticeable bullet dip/leading over distance
No bleedout or bandaging. If you get hit enough times you die instantly or you go to respawn queue while a lengthy death animation plays
Slow down when hit, especially in the legs
No lockdown, or possibly after 10 mins either team can decide to surrender if they type something specifically. No popup vote. Would rather just try with original style without lockdown, so people don't give up and keep trying until near the end. Could get some epic turnarounds in Ostfront
Clean HUD. No unnecessary information displayed
No spawn on squad leader
Longer respawn time/time to get to the action after spawning
Reinforcements as important part of gameplay
No unlocks or levelling. Just standard gear and stats for everyone. If it must be in then just uniform changes or other cosmetic stuff
Clear victory conditions for every map. No "draw" type situations or maps where either team can capture several objectives and win. Attack or defend basically. Best of 3 or so and it must be clear for every player how you will win or lose the round (out of reinforcements/fail to defend or take all objectives).
Must slow down and stop before pulling up iron sights
No immersion breaking "hit sound" when I hit someone miles away.
This one will be unpopular with some but is just my opinion: no artificial suppression/screen blackout. You should feel suppressed due to sound and the fact you can literally be shot. No artificially moving my aim around or making my screen change colour
Might have missed something important..if I have i'll edit it in

Stuff that would technically be in a classic mode but I'm not that fussy on or may actually prefer left out/undecided:

Weapon shot out of hand.
Charged melee attacks, sprint then stab without stopping
No random "battle chatter"
More voice command options with easy to use number system rather radial menu
No free aim in iron sights
Less severe free aim in hip fire mode, or more predictable.

Thats a lot of changes and I wouldn't suggest RO2 needs every single one, but if it were to be a "classic" mode I would expect some of them.

Basically the game should feel immersive, deadly, tactical, like you need to work with your team to progress and rewarding for good aim/capturing objectives. You should care about your virtual life by having more time to get to the fight/feel like you want to help your team to win

They are good many people recommend them, I posted a thread about learning to use the SDK here: http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=74378

Hope we can get many modders and get swimming in maps :)
Feel free to post any other sites you recommend in the thread.

I think a "RO classic" mode is a bad idea. You will never make the reactionist happy. They live on some nostalgic feeling they had 5 years ago. Im sorry to say it guys but you will never have that feeling again. Its gone in the past. Stop whining and adapt to the new RO2 that is a great game.
TWI should instead focus on the vision you have and give us bug fixes, more cotent and features.

My 5 cent,

Nob

RO Classic, that makes me feel old now ^_^

For me, I guess it would be more of a bulkier type of gameplay, in a way.

Includes:

-Longer ads
-Longer Reload times
-UI change
-No recon planes
-Larger, more open maps
-No SL Spawning or forwards spawns. This really made you fear your life in RO1, as mentioned a lot.
-No bandaging
-Injuries have down effects like less stamina, slower walking/sprinting, more sway.
-No MG hip fire.

I'm pretty surprised that you have "heated debates" over the office over the realism mode changes, when the feedback from the community has been pretty consistent and has been repeated over thousands of times(lists, posts) and most of them were the same things. What are you guys still debating?

Btw whatever the debates in your office, please keep your "design team" out of it. They proved themselves to be pretty incompetent.

To me, what RO Classic would need, is most importantly big maps...BIG MAPS.

Yosh the SDK keeps chrashing in content browser ?

is anyone got any ideas on how to stop this happening ?

It happened to me a lot as well. Be sure to FIRST, Save your mission. Should be the first thing you do when starting a new map build. Second, right click on "External" (towards the left side of broswer) and Fully Load. It takes a couple of times for it to completely load everything. That should vastly stablize SDK and content broswer.

My changes would be:

-A more effective suppression i.e. blurred vision, flinching, shakes.
-More sway while standing.
-More sway after running/sprinting.
-Bigger maps.
-Bandaging time increased or even removed
-Lockdown removed.
-The frustrating and deadly "cannot prone here" message, If I'm getting shot at I'll go prone anywhere!..;)
-Easy options for native languages.
-The use button problem get get a bit frustrating too.

So just my pennies worth, not really sure if they are classic RO mind.
But to me the changes above would make the game I really enjoy just that much better.

Cheers all :)

Since I agree with you on so many points I'm just going to quote the few points I disagree with you on.

--I believe bullet drop and flight time is MORE accurately modeled than in Ostfront, as stated by some dev at some point in time, due to access to better data.
--Slow death is fine--I've rarely gotten kills with it or been killed by someone in slow death. Just remove the ability to use iron sights while slow dying. Bandaging just needs to be much lengthier, as does bleeding out.
--Cosmetic levelling and changes I enjoy--it adds visual variety and immersion in my opinion.
--Spawn on squad leader is fairly well balanced in my opinion and helps keep the squad together.
--As for insta-iron sights, an erratic, less abrupt raising of the weapon and poor alignment of the sights should result from entering iron sights from a sprint.
--Suppression is fine in my opinion--the flinches from bullets passing by are very well done in particular. Desaturation can be distracting, but it doesn't drive me crazy.
--free aim is fine imo.

My list for an RO Classic Mode:
--Fix LMG hipfire
--More sway, less zoom
--Better squad system ( HERE ) especially better squad menu
--Better wound system (limb disabling, full suppression when hit, slower bleeding and bandaging)
--realistic weapons, unlocks, and loadouts for realism mode (Note: realistic loadouts mean fewer semiauto rifles and SMGs, which can be accomplished by removing the excess SL roles)
--ability to choose unlocks
--Fixing tank armor bugs/inaccuracies and Tank Hull MG AI--arrow keys to move turret would be nice.
--fixing pheripheral indicators (show only MOVING enemies AND friendlies out to limited distance only, more subtle, cannot function through smoke)
--More of a sway and movement penalty for being exhausted (perhaps you make more movement noise too as a disincentive), slower stamina recovery
--if heroes are to remain in the game, please limit them to one per side.

Not precisely a carbon-copy of Ostfront, but a spiritually identical game mode in my opinion.

And imo, lockdown should be made FAR more lenient (at least eight minutes to take the first and second objective) and should disabled after the first two objectives are taken--the attacking team has proved their mettle by then and has earned the right to fight out the round. Lockdown should either reward a defending team that has performed exceptionally well or end the torment early for an incompentent attacking team--not penalize a simply less-skilled attacking team. It's not a terrible idea in and of itself--I wished for lockdown on many a Kryukovo map or Baksova in Ostfront--but it needs to be much more lenient and allow for the spectacular comeback.:IS2:

While not a realism feature, the currently inaudible footsteps and breathing--even quiet grenade explosions--need a look at too.:)
