I don't think it'd matter that much - as long as it's not the cheapest no-name made in China. Had one like this once and it transmitted with the most godawful distortion imaginable that'd give the people on the receiving end a headache in no time.

Personally, right now I'm using a Phillips SHM3300. At the price of around 14 Euro I've got quite decent earphone quality (enough for my needs, certainly) and I'm guessing a decent mike.

Get a pair of good headphones (Sennheiser 555 ftw!) so you can use them to listen to music as well, and get some cheap mic with a clip-on (not tabletop type!) so you can fasten it to your shirt or the headphone cable. Mic quality doesn't matter much unless you want to record yourself singing or something :p

And get an extension cable for the mic, since most have way too short cables...

I have a Sennheiser set and they have lasted the longest out of all the headsets ive had, I usually kill them after 5 months :) and my sennheiser have lasted allot longer than that.

I have this. I'm not sure if I have gotten the surround sound to actually work (my fault), but it suits me fine.

My last set before the 555 I think I got as a birthday present in about ... 94 I think. The pads got really icky :p so had to replace them a couple times, but otherwise it worked flawlessly throughout and still does... now thats quality :D

Got those too but the newer "pro gamer "edition...( wooo how l33t  )

Anyways DONT buy the older USB only version, it sucks, sucks, sucks. Cable too short, software fubared and whatnot.

Other than that its a great headset for a reasonable price ( got mine new and unused from ebay for around 25e ) and the 5.1 really works well.

Buy a seperate headphone and microphone.

If you only use your microphone for your voice during gaming just get a 5 or 10 dollar cheap as desktop microphone. Any microphone from that budget that you wear will die too quick :p. And use the saved money on a good headphone maybe with amp.

Old stax electrostatics can be obtained for nice prices including an amp.
Or try the Sennheiser 580's with a small amp (they really do need amps though, 590 and 595 need less but aren't as good), while the 600 and 650 are really expensive and need an amp as well). Although even though it doesn't sound the best if you use your headphones for a long time a 590 might be nice if you can get it cheap, they are a bit grado ish sounding not really like a senn can but are easy to drive and are the most comfortable headphones ever made. Although the single cable is kind of flimsy in that.
A good Can can last you years of enjoyment, and will keep your neighbours friendly :p. If you live in a noisy environment and want to block external sound, the Beyerdynamic 880's and newer are my fav closed cans.

Can't say that from my Stax Sr007 :p

For a headset, nothing beats a Koss Sb-40 http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc%5Emm%5ESB40

It has more bass than the Audio Technica ATH-A700's and better sound detail than the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO's.

Though, If your an audiophile or just want really good sound, I would go with either:

the Audio Technica ATH-A700's (or A900's) if you want great sound detail and range.
http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-A700-Closed-back-Dynamic-Headphones/dp/B0002ERGQ0/ref=pd_sbs_e_3

or the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO's if you want bass that would make your head hurt.
http://www.amazon.com/Beyer-Dynamic...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220845482&sr=1-2

Though for either one of those, you'll need a seperate mic. There is a great mod tutorial for mounting a mic on the 770's in a very professional looking manner.
