I got used to the zoom, love it, wouldn't want to go back now. Note however, I found the default control setup to make zooming a pain in the ***. Seeing how zooming is just your natural view, it should also be natural/easy to do in game. Constantly pressing a button does not feel comfortable. That's why I changed it to toggle and use 0 initial IS zoom. Mouse wheel up = constant zoom / mouse wheel down = no zoom. Feels great.

As mentioned by Vesper, there is a downside, namely people running around have a hard time spotting people. To remedy this, I feel a free-look button should be added, which gives max zoom, and can be used at anytime: during sprinting, firing, being deployed etc.

I support the zoom mechanism for realism's sake, but I don't like how it shares the same key with sprint. I hope TWI will allow us to separate the bindings for zoom and sprint in a later patch, along with many other shared keys.

Hint: read the post 3 spaces up, it's already possible.

Personally, I don't like it. It makes it away to easy to spot the enemies and it makes the already easy-to-handle weapons even more easy to handle since you can zoom in and easily spot enemies. Doing this on bigger maps would be devastating since it would be even harder to hide for snipers, at-soldiers, gunners since the player can use this ability. After playing RO ost today, I realized how much harder it was spot and kill down enemies in open fields due to the fact that I cannot zoom in with my eyes.

Full agree!

And if they don`t remove the zoom, it would be nice it could be removed by the server settings. Realism Server = no zoom!

Zoom = "Welcome Camper, you don

I like it even more since I know what this zoom really is. There are reasons why it's in the game and it is not unrealistic to be able to shoot a man up to 300 meters while not being a sharpshooter. Real snipers can kill a man - without scope - from bigger distances too.

We need better maps. That's all. Some classes will benefit even more from this, like marksmen who right now seem to be unused on some maps (the Apartments) because their scope is being rather a disadvantage there than help due to short range engagements and a few good spots to fire from.

Realism Server = no zoom!

But how i say. I would like it much more to have no mega-zoom ingame.

The problem with no zoom being a so-called "realism" setting is that it's actually a feature intended to realize actual engagement ranges more realistically; a correction for fov compromises required by viewing the battlefield through a PC monitor. Rather than being just as artificially and unrealistically zoomed OUT the entire time (because that is what playing the game without zoom is), the game gives you the opportunity --at the expense of some fov-- to see things at closer to the proper scale for the distance, and engage at much closer to the effective range of the weapons.

The only unrealistic aspect of the zoom is that in the game you can't see at that scale all the time because your monitor doesn't allow it while simulating even a major percentage of realistic field of view (actual field of view is much more than 70-75 degrees and even still significantly more than 90, but even these project middle distances back too far). Scale in the middle part of the screen at close to realistic field of view would be utterly ridiculous. So the compromise allows you to zoom in and out and in practice it looks like you're adjusting a camera zoom lens and that intuitively feels unrealistic even though the viewing scale it presents at the middle of your fov is more realistic.

So no, it's backwards to have zoom off in "realism" servers. Because it's a realistic feature even if necessary compromises make it feel intuitively unrealistic.

How did you do this? External macro program? I've not had any luck with the UE3 toggle binding.

Amen. Using it as an artificial penalty to movement is a bit awkward; movement penalties should be baked into the movement itself, not as a key restriction.

Good answer.

But isn`t it unfair for every player who is running arround (to get to the capzone for example) without any kind of zoom? The one who is using the zoom than can kill this running guy very easy. So many player would stay back and don

That it's good but i want a damn dedicated key to do it, i really hate to use the same key of "sprint/run" expecially because if i move a little bit while focusing my pg begins to run and stop aiming :( (i would love to zoom by holding the right mouse button as in arma, but the game options don't allow to set it...)

And zoom is present also in Arma 1 & 2, and WWIIOL and other realistic games and reproduce the "focusing" ability of human's eyes so stop saying bull**** about it and marking it as an unrealistic feature please...

No! There are 2 strong groups here, the one like it, the other hate it :D

And if you want that this disussion about end, there is only one way!

TWI have to make it possible to remove the zoom by the server settings.

I will be one (of many player) who will only join a no-zoom-server. Because it isn

Already possible, see the sticky in the support forum.
