What car do you drive?

You have to remember until recently, the EPA fuel efficiency estimates were about 10-20% over inflated. The 2007 Prius that I bought had a listed 48 mpg when I bought it. Earlier in the year, it was listed as 60 mpg. The revised estimates put the CRX HF at 41 city / 49 highway (still very impressive).

The best solution for now is probably cars like those European diesel powered compacts run on bio-diesel. They get similar or better mileage than hybrids, and would have exhaust that smells like French fries!

According to the new numbers I should be getting 21 MPG AVG, not the 27 I'm actually getting. They list my highway average as only 26! The most I ever got out of it was 41 MPG on road trip.

They didn't go back and retest all those cars. New EPA figures of older cars are just calculations based on modern car use. Including use of AC. Considering CRX HF's usually don't have AC, these calculations aren't totally right. Real people are getting 50+ out of them. Hypermilers are getting 60+.

With modern tech a car like that could get even more. Like I said though, people today wouldn't buy a car like that just to get good gas mileage. They need all the bells and whistles that come with a modern car. Since people won't buy them. No manufacturer will try.

I'm not in the market for new car either way. It would cost me more to buy a new car then to continue to use my 27 MPG AVG gas guzzler.

As far as AC goes. I live in Georgia. We usually have mid-90's throughout summer, but with high humidity. I know what your talking about when it comes to AC.

I would never suggest buying a new car when you don't need to. Of course that'll cost more than using your current car. I only bought a new car, because my old one was costing me $400 in repairs per month for a $1600 (blue book value) car.

Oh I know, that was just a statement more than anything else. I'd definitely consider a new one myself if I were in your situation though.

Reading this thread really makes me want to work on my 1976 Jaguar :(. Garage is full of stuff and the family seems to think thats the way it should be, whenever I take stuff to self help or get rid of old stuff new **** magically appears. The latest is a large mirror thats supposed to go to our cottage and a wood stove because we are now going to start smoking our own meat...? ( Ok if that ever comes true I wont mind, home made beef jerky is pretty damned good ).

So nice to get in and sit in the thing, full leather and wood interior, power everything... * sigh *... ( oh and enough leg / head room for a 6' tall guy...)

Wow, it's been a while since anyone posted on this thread. Before this post it had fallen to page 6!

Well, I just got my project "car" running. It's a 1969 Ford Ranchero. Here is a video of it running. Sorry about the bad focus. The video was mainly so people deciding if they want to run glasspacks can hear what they would sound like.

1969 Ford Ranchero 302 Glasspacks GT40 heads - YouTube

I rebuilt the engine. It's a 302 with GT40 heads, flat top pistons, a 276/286 duration cam, a Performer RPM intake, Holley 600 4 barrel, and long-tube headers with glasspacks. When I get her on the road I'll add tailpipes going all the way to the bumper.

It also has a 3 speed w/overdrive manual trans, and a 3.70 9" rear end.

Here is an old picture of it when I first bought it. It's also posted a few pages back.

Nice.

The glasspacks reminded me about back in the early '70's when I'd just rebuilt my '69 camaro. 350ci, Rochester Quadrajet (if you knew how to tune them, they were awesome), 3 speed muncie, 3:73 rear end. I'd just put headers on (what a pain they were to get into that engine compartment) and lastly....glasspacks. Vroooommmm.....waaaaah pow!

I drove down to the local JC Penny's Car Care Center to get my inspection sticker (I had a friend who was the brake 'specialist' there). Long story short, the jealous little dweeb asshole shop foreman drove the car into the enclosed garage (tin all the way around), he gooses it to the floor....vroooooooom....waaaaaaaahhhh.... punches it and lets off the gas........waaaah POW!. Shook the building. And then the asshole not only didn't give me an inspection sticker, he stuck a red rejected sticker on it. I had to take off the glass packs and ended up putting turbo mufflers on the car. (I liked better anyway, the glass packs would drive you batty cruising down the road).

I never will forget that....... pissed me off....lol.

I just sold this one
Spoiler!

Civic Si on a b20z came out of a CRV with an integra transmission.

Needed the B20 to be "respectable or even drivable"
D16's are horrible engines.

Sold it as door looks kept on freezing, window kept falling of track and well the car just pissed me off since I got it... even after the swap.

So now I drive this boring econobox
Spoiler!

ALH 1.9 TDI
Crime against driving.... Automatic...
418 000 km and running strong.
Vaccum leak turning off the turbo sometimes, but will get that fixed shortly.

3 reason why I got it.
-Sunroof
-tinted windows
-great condition overall, body is clean
-1950$ (tho I am now up to 3000$ (4 new brakes, handbrake fixed, tie-rod, glove compartment, turbo fixes that werent done properly, the starter....) It still starts flawlessly at -20

All in all... I regret it... not for the money... but for horrible automatic tranny... works fine... I just need my clutch.

OK folks, I'm looking for opinions! The Mercury Cyclone you may, or may not have seen in the previous pages may be trade fodder soon. Help me decide if I should keep it, or trade it. Here is a couple of pictures for those who didn't see it. Only 16,000 of these were made. It's the only one I've seen on the road.

It's bone stock, except for dual exhaust, with a 351C 2-barrel. All it needs is door pins, new carpet, and a headliner.

Here is what I've been offered.

It's my old '67 Mustang. I sold it to a friend of mine a couple years ago when I needed some cash. I built the 351W in this car. It has a rebuilt C6 auto with a shift kit, and a 3.50 limited slip rear end. He's raced it against 2011 5.0 Mustang GT's and it stays right beside them. It needs a paint job. Mechanically it's good. A gazillion of these were made. I still see these every now and again out there.

So what do you think? Keep the Cyclone, or trade away?
