I was playing dod b3.1 until it got ruined for me with retail. Played a bit of mohaa where my love for the mostly weakest weapon, rifle started. Can't remember how I discovered RO mod, which was still in the making. Since then I was waiting for the release like a small kid waiting for christmas. At release day I downloaded it some hours after its release. The first map I played was Berlin and I wasn't blown away by the game, but by the fps I had :D With the hardware I had at that time, I got like 15fps. It didn't stop me from playing RO with that hardware for a long period of the mod time. After all this years I'm still playing RO but made my way from mostly public to clan gaming. Without clan matches I would probably had stopped playing a long time ago already.

Funnily enough I became aware of RO1 after hearing about RO2 so I'm pretty new to the whole thing. But after buying the retail version of RO1, I got so addicted that I found that I've been playing it for 70 hours within two weeks. :D

Exam danger

Exam danger

I first saw RO in early 2006 (don't know how I could have been missing it) and used to play DOD:S but once RO was on the HD DOD was never seen again.
I got pretty addicted to the game I must admit with my final exams coming up did not help. Exams lasted for 6 months and I managed overall "good" but to think what I could have achieved without spending hundreds of hours on RO.
I recently bought a new PC just for RO2 (well mainly) so I am waiting for the release impatiently. I went back to play some RO and Darkest Hour and though graphics are outdated it is still the best game in its genre I noticed especially after playing Blops at the free weekend. Played that for 30 min or so, didn't suck but wondered how someone can enjoy this for a longer period of time. Plus I was on a "realism" server which probably meant that really everyone is on crack/cocaine. Otherwise I have no explanation for this moronic game (Blops that is) and the rude Community. Well Blops will be long gone when RO2 is just getting near perfection I assume.

Thank you Tripwire for making these great games. They often are how I wish games were and RO2 is already bought. I even bought RO1 for 2 friends as they were unsure whether to spend

i started playing the mod when it hit version 2. i was into downloading mods at the time. i thought RO and the star wars mod were the best ones. the star wars mod never seemed to take off, but that's ok cause i liked RO. everyone else was playing CoD:UO when i started. i never felt like a had enough quarters to pump into CoD.. none of my friends like it, however, it was too slow for them. so they ate cake while i ate potatoes and steak!

Playing DoD 28th "realism" server. So a friend says "Y'know, we used to play Red Orchestra."

Me, not ever having heard of red orchestra, of course ask what it is.

"Oh just this pretty decent war game on Eastern front and all, realistic, had a lot of good times."

I have to go, but before I close Steam, I check it out. I finally look at the game and it looks brilliant. Severals weeks later, I bought it. And didn't stop playing it for possibly 3 months.

I used to NEVER play shooters where I'd play against human players when I finally dropped the Xbox controller and turned to online PC gaming with Killing Floor! I was then coaxed into buying RO by a friend and we played it together on Danzig. I never looked into the game properly, and decided that it'd be quite run-and-gun, like CoD and such.

So there I was, I spawned with the other teammates, and I had a PPSh and blasted everywhere without aiming, riding my gun like a f***ing pony, galloping accross one of the bridges where I found myself getting shot once and dying instantly.

My friend then explained to me fully on how the game actually works, and then my thought was "I love this game" and I kept on playing! :D And here I am again, waiting for RO2!

Bolt actions brought me here and ofcourse a bit of digging

I remeber seeing some alpa footage along time ago, so I started too check up some more footage wich did lead to RO ostfront.

And I decided too buy it and wait and see.
I absolutely loved it the first time I played it.
Manual bolting hehe that was something new.. Took me quite some time to practice the rifleman class.

But I succeeded doing so
Now I place well aimed shots and hit em 80% of the time after +20 hours of playing.

And the sounds the are soo good especially the mg 42, a beatiful zipping sound or chain saw what ever youll replace it with.
And now I am still enjoying the game these days

What first brought me to RO? Well, I was watching a review for UT 2004, and the guy was rambling on about the mods, and I heard him talk about this really really realistic game called Red Orchestra. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and I was blown away buy the realism it had. I thought to myself "damn, people who play this must have serious balls". Luckily, I had UT 2004, so I decided to download the mod. When I played the mod, I was enjoying the realism tremendously. 2 months later, I decided to buy Ostfront off steam. It has been my favorite game since.

I played ASL before video games and cell phones were mainstream. A lot.

When video games started proliferating, I found myself wishing that there was a game that was like ASL.

After playing MUDs for years, I came across a game called Air Warrior.

When Air Warrior died (I was there on last day), a bunch of my squad mates were talking about a new game called WW2 Online. I went there with them.

In the WW2OL forums, there was talk of a hot new offering called RO. Checked it, loved it, played it, play it. Perhaps one of the first to do so, don't know. Finally a game that felt like ASL in first person.

Eventually, I left WW2OL and now play RO exclusively because WW2OL were doing some really unbelievable things to make the game more accesable (hence my passion for not wanting HOS to follow the same path).

I can't remember the year exactly, but this was around 2006/7. I heard somebody mention Ostfront maybe in a forum about WW2 games, and at this point, I was just a huge Brothers in Arms/Medal of Honor Allied Assault fan. When I googled Ostfront, one of the first hits was this gameplay video with a String Quartet rendition of Bjork playing over top. I loved it so much, as it showed the intensity of the game all set to the "emotionally charged" music. It was probably my favourite game video of all time, but it's gone from Youtube now :(.

I bought Ostfront immediately when I got my new gaming computer in 2008.

EDIT - This has become something of an anthem for RO for me. If I get the hang of camera tools in RO2, I'll do justice and make a battle montage someday :p.

Read about how good the game was and saw screenshots on the forums, tried it during a free weekend on Steam and ended up buying it sinceit was pretty cheap. One of the best buys ever.

Two things: the Wikipedia page for the original Red Orchestra (it looked like it had some very interesting ideas that I liked) and a very old article (2007 or 2008 I think) in a PC games magazine about RO2, I especially liked the cover system and realism.

Edgar Lindner will see you in RO2 again mates fighting for his "Vaterland" (he really was only 16 and with the Kriegsmarine but the other grandpa has my surname and for reasons of anonymity etc. I chose him. Other grandpa was a medic in Russia and got out 3 days before encirclement of Stalingrad. My dad says him and his mates might have liquidated an officer in order to get out but the truth remained unspoken and will probbaly never be found. Recently saw a picture with a note "greatest luck in my life! Got out 3 days before!"
Plus he was a nice man while Edgar was a HJ and straight NAZI all his life, can't blame him though, different times then.
Sorry enough of my family history but I will virtually return to the sites where my grandfather recovered his wounded and fallen Kameraden.
R.I.P. Herbert!
Always nice to hear the stories of family's imo. Really interesting to read all these posts

I saw a blurb about an upcoming WW2 fps pc game on gamespot I think. I looked into it and discovered, to my amazement, a game that focused on the Eastern Front, rather than the typical Normandy or Ardennes games developed thus far (2006).

I also discovered that you had to use a program called Steam in order to play it. So I downloaded the program and streamed the awesome trailer for RO. I was blown away and pre-ordered the game immediately, especially after seeing it only cost $20.00.

The main reason I got the game was because it was oriented around battles on the Eastern Front. I was and am pretty well versed on that theater, and I always hoped there would be a game that portrayed it accurately. I got a couple of my friends to buy on release also.

Use to play CoD2 tactical realism, and had heard slightly of RO. Then they had a free weekend for RO and decided to buy it. Unfortunately I had accidentally paid for it on a friend of a friend's account without thinking, and the jerk changed his password and never let me on. Then I bought it again, but this time I got it at best buy. :)

I saw it on the shelf of some major electronics store and thought it looked cool, but didn't buy it since I didn't have a computer that could even nearly run it. This must have been very shortly after the release. Few months later, I got a new computer but my memory being what it is, in the meantime I'd completely forgotten what it was called.

Some months after that, I was looking through old reviews of games on a Swedish gaming website and thought one looked very familiar indeed. After I realized where I knew it from, an order was placed within 10 minutes. Hardly been playing anything else since. :)

Reading this thread warms my heart! :) It's awesome to hear stories like these. Very good morale and motivational boost for myself and others at Tripwire. Helps remind me that it's worth all the sacrifices to make RO2. It feels very surreal to be completing RO2 and finally getting it out there. It's been a long journey. For myself I feel like I've been working on this game for nearly 10 years now. It truly is a blessing that we've been able to make RO2 and stay totally independent. So I thank all of you for supporting TWI. RO2 is only the beginning of awesome things to come!

You're the BEST!

My brother arbitrarily told me about it - and I was extremely interested in the war ever since I heard about it from Grandpa and in school... I knew Russia was the biggest partaker in the war but the books around my house all concerned USA.

I'll never forget the first time I played RO - F*CK HOW DID HE SHOOT ME!?!

I'll never forget the second time I played RO - Oh my god... I can't believe the immense destruction and suffering that our world has felt.... bullet drop?!... iron sights?!?!?!... I have to learn Deutsch and Russki... Maybe I should look up a 1940s manual on this PTRD....this game is amazing

In 2006 I was *****ing at school where I study, about how all FPS games suck *** nowadays except one called TrueCombat:Elite (which had it's flaws too) and a friend told me I might like RO:O. So I bought it and DAUM was I a happy man.
