I'm not sure about hardware requirements but in my experience, each player uses about 7KB/s on average upstream.

you want a 512kb/s upstream connection at least, usage at default settings does work out to about 7-8kB/s each player.

for hardware you would do well with anything like p4 and above with at least 512MB ram, server itself uses around 200MB on average.

I'm pretty sure you want to run it on something similar to what the recommended system specs are, of course you don't need a nice video card or even one at all.

I've got one running on a P3 933mhz with 512 ram, my folder is 2.4gb but 1.8 gb of that is the maps folder alone, os is FreeBSD 7.1. It runs pretty stable for the most part, game play isn't bad either.
