Well, I guess you can work your way up after taking the Squad Leader position. That's what I've been doing the past few months.

I have only taken the Commander postion when no one else has, well, because we really needed one just for the sake of arty and all. I hadn't done too bad, no one has complained yet and I always let it be know that if someone wanted that postion, I would bow out to a lower one. No one ever asked to take over...

I have played around 100 hours as SL and it still can't make you an expert level TL. I'm at level 85 and I still avoid the TL position because of this catch-22 issue.

I'm amazed at how many noobs jumped on the commander position during this horrific noob weekend and dropped arty on their own team (after asking how to "do arty" and "where's the radio?")

I am with Moe on this, I hardly ever take TL. If played properly there is not much action in terms of assualting the objective. Plenty of action though with spotting, calling, directing, and SMOKE!

I can't remphasize smoke enough on certain maps. when I play as either a TL or SL I always use smoke objectively and then try and resupply for another batch to build that obscuration screen. Some maps are not conducive to multiple smoke re-charges but on the bridges map (others too) it pays off with the ammo dump on both sides on the second caps. Sometimes I just hover there and wait for a recharge and throw again to help the riflemen get in close.
