The original KF weapons have descriptive names, instead of real weapon model names.
(Example - L85A2 AFV as "Bullpup")

The new KF weapons use real weapon models as their names.
(But what's up with the AKS-74U being named "AK47"?)

Little consistency here wouldn't hurt, right? Any comments? Especially the AK47 boggles my mind. I'd really like to hear dev comments on this, since KF's weapons are somewhat realistically and very beatifully made. :)

Yeah whatever but it's a ton more descriptive to read 'grenade launcher' instead of M2534whatever especially since mose weapons seem to start with an 'M'.
The AK is an exception, everyone knows what an AK is (the strongest rifle in the world, right? =P), but MM21? What the hell is that?

Because a rifle utilizing the 7.62mm caliber is definitely stronger than a rifle utilizing the 12.7mm caliber (aka .50), right?

It's an inside joke which you clearly missed out on.

I think this suggestion is mostly pertinent to the nade launchers. I pretty much just skip the names and call them the:

Single shot nade launcher.
Multi shot nade launcher.

But as far as naming conventions go, like Zynthetic said, a lot of the weapon names are trademarked so what you see in a free mod is not too reflective of a product that has to be sold legitimately.

Or perhaps Blooper Gun (one of M79's nicknames) and Revolver Grenade Launcher.
Excuse me? The mod version had only generic descriptive names, but now the official KF game has trademarked names.

Also, inside jokes aside, but I want to clarify some things:

The AK-47 (doesn't exist in KF) uses russian 7.62x39mm round, which is outdated.
The AKS-74U (the "AK47" in KF) uses russian 5.45x39mm round, which can be said to be modern version of the 7.62x39mm.
The Bullpup uses 5.56x45mm NATO round. All these three are intermediate-power rifle cartridges, and they have similar wounding capabilites, albeit different sizes.

For comparison, The M14EBR and SCARMK17 use 7.62x51mm NATO, a full-power rifle cartridge.

Just saying, bullet diameter doesn't tell you everything. But let's forget the realism - we're talking about a zombie game here. ;)

This early on, I would not mind whatsoever if the descriptions were changed to be more direct. The AK is understandable, but here are my suggestions for renaming:
SCAR -> Tactical Assault Rifle
AA12 -> Automatic Shotgun
M14 -> High-Powered Rifle
M79 -> Light Grenade Launcher
M32 -> Heavy Grenade Launcher

The SCARMK17 is a battle rifle, not assault rifle, and M14 uses the same cartridge. M79 and M32 also use same 40mm grenades. :D

The AK-47 in Killing Floor is not an SU variant according to Tripwire.
And if the Trader can acquire a huge stockpile of Katanas and 6 of earth's 12 AA12s, she could probably get herself a bit of outdated ammunition while she's at it.
Short version of AK is not AKM. AKM is the mass produced slightly modified version of the ak-47 that became used by almost every force that picked up arms (for free thanks to Russia shipping them to everybody). The AK ingame is an AK-47 shorty, but not an SU smg variant.

Edit: I think just EBR would be a good name for the M14.

Nah, M79 is "Terminator 2 grenade launcher" and the M32 is the "Resident Evil grenade launcher." Close enough names anyway.

the Kalashnikov in KF is a Romanian AKM modified with a short barrel and custom gas block.

yes, they do exist, people build them, and judging from the quality of the models in the game, i would not be surprised if it was one of the devs that built that gun and used it for reference.

I agree, seeing "EBRM14" (M-14 EBR custom job) next to my "HANDCANNON" (Desert Eagle) is kinda annoying. im sure if someone pokes around enough, they might find the file that controls the weapons display names and make a very well thought out mod for us (if Tripwire is being prevented from doing so, understandable)
