I'm inclined to disagree that we need more Doom maps. Sure, it's kind of cool to go and play the retro maps, and I love Doom, but I'm more interested in seeing the community create some new and original stuff.

Not that I'm dumping on the effort - it is fun. But the Doom maps will never have the sophistication of gameplay that KF has. They're linear and designed to be played from start to finish, whereas KF is all about non-linear gameplay.

No one is forcing you to play them. im myself am a huge fan off maps that dont use the original atmosphere..

No one is forcing you to play them.

That's very true, but it does mean that time and talent is being taken away from making original creations, which I personally find more interesting and are more valuable to the community.

I'm not saying "don't re-make old maps", just that there's probably greater value in making something new.

People do get kicks out of re-playing a level from a well loved game of old. If you hadn't loved the game originally, you might not see a whole lot of interest in the KF version.

On the content/permission debate: AFAIK, doom and doom2 are open source, meaning you can use and edit the content as you see fit, I think, so long as no money made. Whether you can put the content in a game other than Doom I'm not sure. Lethal, let us know if you hear back from ID software or whoever you need to contact.

Yeah, people misunderstand this all the time.

ID has made the CODE for the Doom engine free to the public but not the ASSETS, e.g. the art, sounds, levels, etc.

You can muck around with the program and recompile it to your hearts content, but the actual game assets are still copyrighted material.

http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Doom_source_code for info on the initial release of the source code.

Exactly, and that's why you need to own Doom to play one of the many source ports. The ports just add functionality to the Doom engine but if you want to play Doom you need to copy over the wad file(s?) from your original Doom.
If a Doom port does not require this it either uses it's own assets exclusively (e.g. FreeDoom) or it uses Doom assets illegally, or someone bundled the legal Doom port with the assets and put the whole package up for grabs (illegally but not necessarily with the consent of the developers of the port).

Same with Quake 3, btw. The engine is open source now, which is why what used to be Quake 3 mods can now be stand-alone games (World of Padman, Tremolus, Smoking Guns, Urban Terror). But only if they use their own assets exclusively! The game Quake 3 is still being sold.
There is OpenArena which is basically the same as Quake 3 was but it replaces all the assets with it's own ones. The gameplay is more or less identical to Quake 3 though.
