While the radar may be a bit hokey, I think it's purpose is to serve as situational awareness that you'd have in the battlefield if you were there. Let's wait to see how this all pans out when the game is released guys. You're going to play the game regardless, maybe it'll take a little time to get used to but you'll manage.
And if anything, maybe there are servers/mutators that can have them removed anyways.
From what I understand... it is suppossed to be more like a mini-map and not a radar. Because you are limited to what you can see by the FOV of your monitor, the mini-map allows you to be aware of other friendlies in your immediate vicinity that you would normally know about in real life. In this way it gives you information that you would normally know if it was real life and is not hindering you because of some game limitations (screen size etc).
I think too many people here are equating it to radar because that is what it is in OTHER GAMES. If you don't like the looks of it, or the idea of it, I'm sure you can turn it off in your HUD options.
Those two guys are right, making the game harder doesn't necessarily make it more realistic, there are thing which would be easy to do or figure out IRL but are not in RO1, such as, you guessed it: just simply knowing where you are and where you're going.
But don't worry, even with the minimap displayed, you will still have to show the entire map from time to time, because mini-map doesn't help that much when it comes to know where a distant objective is.
I think people overestimate how easy it's to keep track of people around you. You have to look around to keep track,
Except IRL not only your FOV is larger but your eyes can move on the sides, you don't have to turn your whole head on your right to look at your right side. Plus both your eyes and your head are quicker and easier to use than your mouse.
