I'm not sure if the idea has been suggested before, but I was curious as to how it would turn out if the tank drivers could be killed by gunfire into the vision slit (sorry if the terminology is incorrect). Of course it would be incredibly hard to effectively shoot the driver, and if you're up close to the front, the machine gunner could probably cut you down, but I was just interested on how this could play out gameplay wise. From what I could tell it would also be much easier to attack a Pz IV than a T-34 in this manner because the vision slit appears larger. What do you guys think?

The have armored glass in there and they can put a metal visor over that, you could get a hit with a PTRD but you'd have to be good.

So Tom Hanks was just wasting bullets in SPR? (joke )

But cracking that glass and making it harder to see would be nice thing to have.

Replacement glass kits were in the tanks, and could be swapped out in mere seconds.

Nice idea though, and we see it in DH when your optics get knocked out.

Pistol ports were usually closed and only opened from the inside.

Yeah as everyone else says, they used thick armoured glass which was both replaceable and block able with metal doors. Not only that a lot of tanks also utilized periscopes on top of all that.

Such as the T-34:

(awesome cutout BTW, even the crew get sliced! :p)
The T-34 had retractable armored vision covers as well as replacement armoured glass pannels (this one's a T-34:85):

And this because some crazy fool handcrafted it, I figure that deserves some recognition! showing at least handy places to aim haha.

People did open their hatches because you really can't see a lot through the vision slots but not in urban settings for obvious reasons. Early tanks didn't have glass vision slits though but by 1942 all the ones in service did :p
