Is there any way to loop back voice chat? Similar games have such a feature so that you can hear yourself talk as well.

Thanks.

I'd like to only pick up audio when I'm broadcasting through the mic, otherwise all background noise and clicking will be heard. I figured there would be some console command to loop my voice back to me.

You shouldn't have any serious problems with background unless you're using a laptop with a built-in microphone (why, why would one do this). Just make sure the playback volume isn't set too high. I do this all the time, although I use a microphone mounted on a stand so it's a little different to using a headset.

Well, the reason I ask is for recording purposes. And hearing what's coming through my mic only when I'm talking would be ideal. It's a feature many other games have, so I'm assuming there is no such command in KF?

if there is such a command in UT24K than there is in KF, if not, then there isn't, and if by most you mean only mainstream companies than you are correct, otherwise just no.

I assume the plan is to use a screen capture program and record you and your friends playing and record what you are saying as well.

Well I know Fraps will record a second input, all the time mind but then just keep the gain down.

And give me an example of a game that uses mic monitoring, it's not something I have ever seen in a game.

Correct, FRAPS does also record external sound. This might be the best thing for me. Most of the Source engine games feature a command called Voice_loopback which when set to 1, plays your output as everyone else is hearing it. It's good to get an idea of your mic levels.

KF uses Windows for mic options, it's not like the handful of games that use their own.
In that you have playback devices and recording devices, which are exactly what they sound like. Try recording "what you hear" with PCM and Mic unmuted on playback. It should work since what you hear is both the game and your mic. If you're picking up game sounds through the mic play with a headset.
If for some reason "what you hear" doesn't record both the game and mic you could just plug a mp3 player into the line out to actually record what you hear and dub the audio in a video later.

The "listen" checkbox on Windows 7 is indeed a good option, as well as the "record external output" from FRAPS. I think I'll try these out. Thanks guys!

Latest version of Fraps has an option to record the external input only when a button is pressed. Bind to the PTT key and you are good to go.

I'm supprised I missed that function in Source but then hearing my voice back at me is a huge distraction.

I mostly missed an always on mic, or voice activated, ive since moved to steam voice for comms with people i usually play with, can always say something to those not invited as normal, others on the steam chat will hear an echo though

It definitely is a bit of a distraction, but for recording purposes, and quickly just to check how you're coming through, it's excellent. There's really no other reason you would need to use it, unless you just love the sound of your own voice.

As for Fraps having a specific key pressed in the new version... WOW! Awesome, that's a perfect solution for what I'm trying to do.

Thanks so much!

Just a note in regard to the screen shots above: the video capture FPS usually limits the game's FPS, so if you set it to 30 you'll only get 30fps in-game. I always use 60 when I record (with half-size as in those images) and it works well despite my not-so-meaty machine.
