Category: Code, Other

Reproducibility: Always

Summary: No audio when sending or receiving voice.

Description: The voice chat has been partially-functional under Steam Play Proton since an update in mid-2020. When recieving voice in-game from other players, their icon shows but nothing is heard. Sending to other players voice has a similar effect.
  1. Open KF2
  2. Configure or already have configured voice chat functionality via the menu system
  3. Enter into a game with other players via Matchmaking, or server browser.
  4. Have other players use voice chat.
  5. Observe the voice icon appearing on the screen for the players using voice chat.
  6. Use voice chat.
  7. Confirm that the other players are unable to hear voice.
As discussed by Romano on the proton github issues tracker (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1328#issuecomment-664030165), this appears to be universal among Proton users.

Since last KF 2 updates, the VOIP in game doesn't work anymore. It was changed to use VIVOX communication in game now to allow cross play with EGS players. here is my last session proton log if it can help, but I didn't see anything relevant.

steam-232090.zip

I tried to use VOIP in game and I saw the little icon with other player's names but neither me or us could hear a sound from each other.

It was previously using Steam native thing I think, and it was working back then.

There is speculation about what the cause might be, and based on some log messages, it might be related to this:
Here is what I filter in the game log file itself, searching for 'vivox'

The issue with Vivox voice chat seems to be that it fail to 'login'
vivoxLoginState != login_state_logged_in

I didn't see a thread on this particular topic, and don't expect Tripwire to be following Proton development, so here is a thread, and here's to hoping it's a low effort fix.

Online/Offline: Online.

That's unfortunate as it could redeem you for lying about the Linux version I'm still waiting for..

Indeed, I didn't open a thread here as it is useless devs don't care about the years old issues or QOL needed for server admins (they actually strip functionalities instead of adding them...), or whatever we talk about or request.
