If I recall correctly, last year's alpha video told us that there would be a co-op gamemode where you could play through single player levels cooperatively with other players in a "terrorist hunt" like gamemode.

I wonder, are there any plans to make a versus co-op gamemode? That is, players on opposing teams command squads/fireteams against each other? This would be an opportunity to make a new, exciting and unique game type which we've seldom seen before (did Brothers in Arms do this already?). Being able to combine the best aspects of multiplayer and single player would be incredible. The result is a game that combines the experience of playing against real, intelligent and unpredictable humans with the ability to use squad tactics and command units who behave in a believable manner.

Then there's also the possibility of having massive battles with a huge number of both human and AI players. Imagine having only 16 players in a game, but each able to command 3 soldiers in their fireteam, making a massive 64-player game. Or, 64 players each commanding a fireteam for an epic 256 player battle! Okay, that last one is less likely, but one can dream...

versus co-op aka multiplayer

What he means is that every Player commands a few AI Soldiers (3 to 7 maybe) and each side contains X Players. The Advantage of such a System would be that even with only 8 to 12 Players per Side you'd have 32 to 96 Soldiers per side. Though one would probably need a bigger Server based on the total Number of Avatars active.

Yeah, I wasn't really sure what to call it. "Multiplayer with bots" has a negative connotation.

Anyways, depending on whether or not AI in Heroes are considered bots or NPCs, servers might not need extra slots to accommodate them.

Why would "multiplayer with bots" have a negative connotation to it when that is exactly what is is: bots. There is no such thing as artificial intelligence (AI) in gaming.

I mean if major universities around the globe, with millions in grants/funds, are still working on it, why would anyone think a gaming studio could make it happen and make it happen on a fraction of the budget these universities have?

I wish game developers would drop bots altogether and spend their time on tweaking the MP PvP experience.

Just because people are working to work on artificial intelligence for various purposes doesn't mean that artificial intelligence doesn't already exists in various shapes and forms.

Heck we had boats pretty much as long as human history and we still study those things today.

Or we could stop being so **** about the term used.

We all know that when we speak of AI in this context we're talking about the behaviour of the bots. And if you want to be really ****, the definition of AI is

the study and design of intelligent agents where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success

Sounds a lot like bot routines wouldn't you agree?

Anyway I imagine it'd be pretty easy to get a 2 man server setup and have the bots do the rest.

I think I have an explanation for versus co-op or "Counter-Operative" as it's known as in Perfect Dark. The idea is not exactly new (nearly a decade old actually). Its the single player campaign, but one (or some) the enemies are played by human players. The "good" player (that is the main one), tries to complete his/her objectives while the other player(s) try to kill him/her. Quite similar to Left 4 Dead as was pointed out. This isn't and shouldn't be about bots or Ai and I have no idea where that whole argument started. I'm assuming something was misunderstood or lost in translation.

for lan parties it would be pretty fun to be able to battle 2v2 with every person being a squade leader with say a small assault and rifle squad.

that way 2v2 would be like 14v14

This is the impression i got and how it would work. I wonder if the bots will get confused or will they just follow the orders from one squad leader.

I do remember liking Brothers in Arm's mp with bots and think it would be cool to have a 4v4 with bots filling out the ranks to make a 32x32.
