I saw that it was on sale on Steam, did a little research, and bought it. I am VERY impressed, it's truly a great RPG.

Anyways, the game is horribly unstable and crashes. Frequently. Again, I did a little poking around, and was able to confirm that the game comes off of Steam fully-patched. Since I sincerely doubt that I'm the only person here to have played this game, I have to ask: are there any fixes/third party patches, or absolutely ANYTHING I can do keep this otherwise frickin' awesome game from crashing?

I think your only hope are the community patches - if they work on steam. I had a lot of trouble with the game as well (non steam version).

At least Troika got what they deserved for delivering a buggy game like this: they went broke.

Aye, its a great game!, but the company went bankrupt whilst making it, and sadly it shows, there are bugs, the engine is not really optimized, and in a few places you can tell corners where cut, and its a damn shame.

There are some community patches, but they mostly deal with game inbalances and scripts/dialog and item placements that where not all that great, only few of them tries to resolves some of the technical issues with the game.

But it sounds like the Steam version is pretty bad, i never had crashes, bad FPS, sure, scripts failing to play, yeah a few times, but never crashes..

There are a few community patches, try looking around www.gamershell.com
I'm not sure if those work on the steam version, though.

Myself, i'm playing the original game, Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption atm :) I love the story there.
Anyways, good luck.

There's another game? Is it as awesome the Bloodlines? Is it still available? Do tell!

Yes, its older than bloodlines and was called Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, and was an RPG (whereas Bloodlines is an FPS-RPG), i never did play it though, never heard about it untill a while after i had played Bloodlines.

Retail Bloodlines is awful. I think Activision flogged Troika in order to get a game from them using the "new" Source engine out as soon as possible.

A dedicated community has helped to make it acceptable, but it's still well below par given how good Redemption was.

Alright, I downloaded a third party patch, and since I couldn't sleep last night, I had a lot of time to test it out. I had three crashes in about nine hours, which ain't so bad when you're used to a crash within ten minutes of startin' up the game. And only one of those crashes actually made me turn off my computer, it used to make me kill the power to my laptop every time and reboot. The trick is to save frequently, because the games autosave function doesn't work quite as well as it should.

Anyways, it's probably one of the more awesome games I've played, certainly not a bad score for ten bucks. The characters are generally far more memorable than anybody I encountered in Oblivion, even Morrowind. It's what helps make the game that much more immersive (is that the right word, immersive? I've been up too late...) than the last two Elder Scrolls games (sorry, Morrowind :( ).

And while the stability is still bad, I seem to worse off than anybody else who owns this game, and I've been able deal with it.

Thanks to everybody!

Yeah it's the original, much older, but it was more of a traditional RPG.

The story spans out across 800 years, starts in medieval times then finishes off in modern times.
I love the attention to detail in there though, for example in the medieval time they speak old-english :)
It's completely lineair, even more then Bloodlines since there are no sidequests but only the main one, but IMHO the story more then makes up for it.
There is a downside to this though, wich is the levelbosses wich can be extremely hard if you dont have the right equipment (wich you will have to buy ofcourse.. and since there is no secondary questing, all you get is from the main missions). For example i had a lot of trouble with Mercurio (vampire, who take damage a lot more from aggravated damage, while i had a weapon that did lethal damage), but it was extremely easy bashing down the Golem in the jewish quarters cause i had a weapon that did bashing damage etc etc.

*spoilers of the story ahead, though the depth and quality of the story cant be expressed could not be transferred without telling all of this... Dont worry though, there is much much more going on then just this*
Now, onto the story: Your Christoff, a crusader and soldier of God. One day during a battle near Prague you get shot by an unfriendly archer, so the company leaves you behind at Prague's convent to regain strength, and they want to pick you up later when they return. You get treated by a young nun called Anezka.
You both fall in love with eachother hopelessly, but since she is a nun there is no hope for the both of you. One night in the convent, you awake from screams in the next room, and as you walk over you see Anezka and another nun being threatened by Slachta's. (servitors of a demon in the silvermines nearby) You kill them, Bishop thanks you etc. After you've killed the demon in the mines, you are heralded in Prague as a great warrior.
However, in your glory you get noticed by the local vampire clans who all want you to fight for them, and the Brujah race to turn you into one of their own.
So there you are: a holy warrior, who lived for fighting for God, suddenly desecrated, became a creature of the night himself, the ones he hated so much and tried to exterminate.
Lost of all hope for himself, he falls into deep depression, he will never see Anezka again... Or so he thinks, as Anezka has left the convent and her holy duties in search of Christoff, as her love is simply to big, and she searches without fear amongst the creatures of the night (other vampire clans etc) to find you, but then dissapears...

best part of redemption were the middle ages

modern times sucked some how :(

Probably because you just were used to the middle ages, cause i know that feeling.
The gameplay is still the same though, only different weapons and stuff, and they ditch old-english ofcourse..
Love it though how Christoff keeps speaking old-english for a little while longer and he gets looks from everybody cause of his weird speaking hehe.

Best part of Redemption was the Storyteller mode in multiplayer that enabled one player to be the "Dungeon Master", possess NPCs, move them, talk through them, spawn items, monsters, etc. Basically create your own storylines.

There were servers up 24/7 and almost all were the medieval times. You would go hang out at the Inns, sharing stories in character, with other players. Everyone was always in character. I had built a few levels for Redemption, one was quite popular, The Green Dragon Inn:

I also hosted a campaign called "The Darkness". Man, that game was fun. I might reinstall. :)
