We're going to attack Iran; no doubt about it.

The folks in power here have been wanting to invade Iran ever since the U.S. Embassy was ignominiously overrun in the 1970's and all those hostages were taken and the oil companies were driven out.

Iraq invaded Iran in the 1980's and we helped with supplies and weapons.

My guess is probably an air strike against the nuclear facilities.

An invasion of Iran seems improbable at this time; but if a new Administration takes over in 2013, I think it is more possible that could happen.

I very much doubt Iran would do something as stupid as trying to close the Strait, but you never know what's going to happen. I just hope America doesn't get involved in another war, or police action, or whatever they're calling it these days. We are already running on borrowed money.

There's no way in hell we could invade Iran, not so soon after just now calling it quits in Iraq. I think there would be problems not only in the gov itself but the military, since actual manpower has dropped dramatically.

We'll probably just keep pulling strings like always. More nuclear scientists will meet untimely ends and nobody will really know what's going on.

Maybe the Iranians are working on an IED which can zap carriers?

They certainly had enough field testing of their IEDs in Iraq.

Incidentally, the Saudis are far more likely to pull off something like the murder of a scientist successfully. My understanding from someone I know in the Saudi defence ministry is that the US commonly subs out that kind of wet-work in the region to either them or Mossad.

There may also be remnants of SAVAK contacts in Iran that could be called upon to do a job like that - assuming they were in deep enough cover to survive 1979. The British government pensioned off a load of old Pahlavi supporters who now live on the UK taxpayer's ticket in London.

Let's face it.. what was the last unequivocally successful US operation? The invasion of Grenada, maybe.

*Edit* Tho, it has to be said, the PsyOps efffort around Russia/Georgia was a pretty big success.

An airstrike will never happen I think.
In the first place it would have minimal effect, 2nd it would mean war.
Iran can and will take Israel along with it's downfall. Iran has thousands of ballistic missiles that can reach upto Istanbul + Hezbollah + enough nulcear material to fill up missiles that can heavily nuclear contaminize the Israel-Lebanon region for decades.

Lest not forget the biological weapons Iran has.
It would be foolish of the US and Israel to go further than bluffing.

I'm more afraid of the US than of Iran, Iran has never started actual agression against another country the past 50 years. To put it mildly, you can't say that of the US and Israel.

I fully understand the view of Iran, coming from it's trauma by the US induced Iraq-Iran war.

A missile strike doesn't mean war. Iran is not stupid, and they know waging a war without sympathy from other countries would be to dig their own grave. Israel bombed Iraq's nuclear facilities in the 80's. Where was the war from that?

If Iran launched one missile at Israel, it'd be over. We would see Shock and Awe 2.0 from them and us. Iran would never launch another missile afterwards.

I think we actually could pull it off if **** hit the fan. Of course, the propaganda department would need to go into overdrive to gain everyone's support. But if they did their job right, we could surely allot funds for a war with Iran. I don't think the troop decrease would do much to hamper a victory against them either. We have a lot of Guardsmen that can be called up for service, too.

Ugh I hate how people here are theorycrafting about a USA vs Iran naval conflict when it already frickin happened not that long ago. Iran lost a ship destroyer, some speedboats and an aircraft or two.

And now guess which countries navy has not changed since then...

After reading this thread and especcially the posts of 1-2 individuals: lol. And people call me a troll. I especcially like how they reference to US forces/government/propaganda department/whatever as "we". Sad story.

I tend to refer to the US Navy as "we" because I held commission in it for, oh, 9 years.
