I know that what we saw in the trailer is probably subject to change, but I think this is something that should be changed before the final release.
In the trailer the American "back packs" appear to be buttpacks worn on the upper part of the H-harness.

This is possible in real life but was very uncommon to see them worn that way during the war.

I think that if the skins change with rank like in RO2/RS then the US Army packs in RS2 should work the way you see them on maps like Kobura and Maggot Hill.
ranks "X" - "XX" would get P68 ruck sacks similar to these, which was MUCH more common to see during the war. The US soldiers had to basically carry everything they would need for operations that would last for multiple weeks.

Once the player reaches a certain rank (or becomes short) then we could see the skin change to have lighter gear like the ARVN ruck sack

or just the basic web gear and buttpack

By the way, after reaching Battle Hardened till Veteran skin should be more lighter, like you said and weapons shouldnt be clean and shiny like on RO2 and RS they did. They must be dirty, shabby with windings to show progress to other players how far in this war you've gone.

This is definitely a huge part of the game, uniforms have to be right to help get the atmosphere correct. Please don't leave the U.S. models as is. These packs do make a difference. Especially getting shot in the pack and maybe taking some extra damage. Eh? Eh?
