The dump file isn't going to help us. Unfortunately they just are not as useful as they were intended to be. The Unreal Engine 3 dump file system is a huge improvement, but still lacking in some cases.

This is definitely going to require us to do something in studio.

Same issue here. Vista x64 with X-Fi Extreme Gamer. I actually had this issue with RO:O and trying Darkest Hour Last night. It sometimes works for about 5 mins but instantly crashed when last tried. I swear it was working fine in Killing Floor last week when i was playing but will have to go back and check if the box for use system driver is still unchecked.

Unfortunately we don't have a set up like that, but I'll talk to the men in charge and see if we can get a rig setup to fix this. Maybe Creative will be kind enough to give us some free X-Fi cards :D

They should, a few years back they wanted to replicate a bug with X-Fi cards and SLi so they took my rig and gave me a brand new one that cost probably an extra 2 grand. Maybe if it's a driver issue they'll give you all new dev machines. :D

It'll be nice when the problem is squashed, hopefully Red Orchestra can be patched up too. I've been dying to play these games with the Creative driver, it sounds amazing with System Driver unticked and the positioning is spot on with headphones.

The Card doesn't neccesairly have to be Creative's either, and X-Fi based Sound card will do (although X-Fi=Creative involved) Mine's from Azuntech. As for Vista (I use 64), you can just use the Windows 7 RC for free (should get the same problem as Vista). It is important that this stuff is fixed because the kernel used in Vista is the one that's going to be used for a LONG time, and XP will stop having driver support meaning no more XP.

Any update on the situation devs?

I wish I still had my older PCI X-Fi, I'd donate it to get this issue fixed :(

firstly: you have vista.

secondly: you have the 64 bit version of vista.

you will get the bugs more then anyone else because you have the operating system with the most bugs in it still.

Aside from stating the obvious whats the point of your post ?

Trying to palm this off as just an OS bug is a little naive. 5.1 surround in vista 64 works. 5.1 surround in win7 64 works. It just doesnt work under the old unreal engine. It works in unreal 3 engine. OS bug or issue with the old tech engine i wonder..

Only OpenAl based game i've found that CANT run in 5.1 surround mode on Vista 64 or Win7 64. Everything else i've tried works perfectly.

I can only speak for XP, but I have no problems with surround sound with my X-Fi card in any game so far. No ideas about the other OS's...

Indeed. XP is spot on, you can uncheck system driver and actually get 5.1 surround ! Would seem to be limited to Vista x64 / Win7 x64. Its a real shame as the difference between 2.1 and 5.1 in this game is just astonishing.

XP x64 works fine ( or at least i havent had it crashed in serveral 1hr + sessions), so it would not appear to be just a general x64 compatibility issue.

I just tried changing my "defalult Format" under control panel> right clicked speakers>configure speakers..advanced.

I changed it to 16bit, 96000 Hz and didn't have any crashes for about 20 mins(quit the game, not a crash). Didn't really tell a difference with sound quality but at least no crashes.

The devs really need to fix this because XP is going to disappear, you can't expect there to be drivers and support for XP after 2012. I mean, by having this game have Vista issues you're having this game have issues with EVERY SINGLE OS from XP forward. Not a good idea.

Well changing the default format didnt fix the problem.

I don't think you can blame the devs for this one. It seems like it has to do with vista and creative.

Vista & creative issue is when the game doesnt use openal but directx - thats when you have to try and fudge it with alchemy.

Does seem very specific to the unreal engine given that any other openal game i have runs fine with 5.1 surround in vista / win7.

At least the next RO will use unreal 3 engine which appears not to suffer from this issue with surround, even running vista or win7 64. Man i cant wait for that !

A new OpenAL version came out recently; just a warning to everyone it does not fix the issue.

Is there any update on the X-Fi situation developers?

Its been crashing on XP64 for me now also..

I have gone back to good old fashion dual boot win7 / xp and the surround works like a dream in XP. Gonna be the best solution i think mate.
