Why no thread on the game itself yet?

Had a hard time choosing between this and Gears of War, but now I'm glad I made the right choice. This is the first UT game I've bought, so everything is completely new to me. First thing that amazed me was the graphics. I don't know what the hell the naysayers are thinking, because this is easily the most beautiful game I've ever played. I only have my graphics sliders set to 4 and I think the game stomps everything else visually. The indoors and smaller maps (most of the maps I've played so far) look awesome in particular and run better too. Nearly all the maps are visually dynamic, with stuff happening in the environment that even affect gameplay at times.

However, the larger maps look slightly less awesome. Because of the large size they'll have less detail, and also when you look at landscapes and structures from a distance they'll get noticeably blurred and "washed out". I'd say a good example is the Suspense VCTF map people saw in the demo, but keep in mind I've only seen a couple of maps like this and they still look damn good compared to other games.

I don't know which weapons and vehicles are new or which are old, so I'll just talk about what impressed me the most. The weapon models look very good with the self shadowing and other shader effects and texture work, and they also look complex too. Its fun to fire some weapons just to watch the animations and moving parts.

Vehicles look awesome too, but what caught my attention the most were the leg animations for the Necris vehicles. I've never seen vehicles (or anything really) walk like the Darkwalker and Scavenger. They can walk onto practically anything, and the legs believably step and grip onto surfaces at any angle.

My big disappointment though is the menu and interface system. Its really bugged and kinda difficult to navigate through. For instance, only being able to view servers for one gamemode at a time is bad enough without the stupid server browser ignoring your search parameters. Want to view servers that aren't empty, aren't full, and aren't locked? Well too bad, because the server browser gives you a list of all the servers it finds regardless. When I go back to make sure the search parameters are what I wanted, they automatically change back to defaults. Also, in the results menu after a match you can select player's names and click "view details" to invite them to your friends list or send a message and all that kinda stuff... supposedly. The game doesn't care what player you select before you hit "view details", it just gives you the details on a random player every time. There's a few other bugs I won't explain, but basically the menu system is practically broken.

Aside from that though, I haven't really seen any major bugs in-game. The only big problem I've had is that when I tried to start a campaign, the cinematics would freeze and crash. A quick visit to the Epic forums solved that though, all I had to do was edit the games .ini file and it was fixed.

Most people probably dont have it yet, its only been out for 2 days, and people have just used their dirty monies on Crysis and CoD4, and are spending time on that.

But i will definately be getting it sometime next week, if i can find it in stock.

The big question i have is does it play more like ut99 than the last 2?
dloading demo to find out.
I just want simple fast paced deathmatch and the odd bit of ctf in fantastic settings- sod the later additions like adrenaline and the obscure game modes

Not sure if this has changed from the demo, but so far some maps are really horribly imbalanced towards vehicles. Spawn weapons are all either slow projectiles, or do piss poor damage, meanwhile, all the anti-vehicular weapons are WAY the heck out of the area. In other words, in the demo, I got raped by Mantas WAY too much.

I got the Collector's Edition for the 10+ hours of UE3 training videos, and all the other good stuff. Honestly I wasn't all to interested in the actual game. However, it does run very well on my rather old machine, but the biggest complaint I have of it is the menu interface, it wouldn't let me create a profile for some reason. While it does feel more like UT99 than the previous UTs, nothing beats the original.

I only played the demo. Had around 30 frames per second in Shangri La there. It looked and played very well, but I don't think I can run it well. 30 frames might be good enough for a slow-paced game, but its not enough for UT3. Especially not since bigger levels run even slower.

I might have upgraded my graphics card for it, but the developers made one crucial mistake:
They made UT2004 too damn good.;)

Had the game since Friday. I'll give you a small review.

Graphics: The graphics are good. But no where near the quality of the pre release screenshots released over a year ago (this is standard of mainstream games these days). Gears of war is a much better example of the engines graphical capability. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are really good - but i have seen better in gears. This is a fast paced multiplayer game after all and the performance needs to be high.

Game modes: The deathmatch is the main reason i play this game, its the finest in the series imo. CFT sadly only has 6 maps, but these maps are very well balanced. UT2K servers only ran face, instagib only anyway. Vehicle CTF i have not played much of but i don't really care much for the vehicles. Warfare i have not experimented much with either as i am not much of a vehicle freak. From what i played it appears to be the same as onslaught.

Weapons: The same tried and tested weapons that have been in the past 3 games (minus the ripper) and they have all been balanced and refined. Even the biorifle is good! All feel meaty and satisfying to use.

Content: Not as much as UT2K4 unfortunatly, although it should always be quality over quantity (although i love to be spoilt for choice). But i feel like something is missing from this game. Maybe its the lack of the excellent assault mode, or invasion co-op. Not to worry though, Epic have always been very generous with added content, and as always with every Unreal release - the very excellent editor comes as standard :)

I'd give the game 8/10. The UI needs polishing up, and the bloody friends system does not work but over time this is going to shape up nicely and if Epic roll another "Make something unreal" contest then there are going to be some very nice things to come.

I dont have the game yet, but I prefer the UT3 (demo) graphics than the ones in gears of war any time, gears of war is just too grey and weird

Fair enough. I am starting to appreciate UT3's graphics some more. I have just had a awesome DM and CFT game and seen more maps, there is much more colour in UT3. Bare in mind i have only had the game since Friday.

Gears does create a good atmosphere though, the mission where your APC breaks down in the forest. The heavy rain complimented by the lighting from the moon on the trees looks phenomenal. I pictured crawling through some Russian forest on my belly in the pissing down rain while running this engine. The future RO is going to be very nice :)

For now at least, UT2004 > UT3.

The problem is that they nailed the balance on UT2004, the weaponry, and the map design.

There just is not much to improve besides the graphics (and the improvement in this game is... debatable)

Hate the new vehicles (hoverboard????), LOVE how the weapons look and feel (the Biorifle, always one of my favorites, now feels and looks ****ing awesome)

But for now, UT2k4 for me.

UT 2004 = floaty feeling = me doesn't like it

UT 3 = feels more solid, yays.

But some deathmatch levels are badly designed in terms of flow and THE GODDAMN JUMP DISTANCE. I always fall short when I'm trying to jump onto something.

My opinion if anyone cares.

i'm aware you can do that but the point im trying to make is they put a game out there saying the visual knock u out etc etc but thy dnt giv most people how play the game (with no idea about forcing vid card settings) the options to do it in game...just seems very strange not to include that, and having sliders for the gfx options also annoys me a little. but like i said the game is ok.

I dont give a **** about other people not knowing the AA thing, its not my problem, if they dont know how to force it, they probably dont even know what it is, or dont even care about it

but I agree that the sliders are lame crap

completely agree but then again i'd also have to say that epics marketing is for the average joe computer gamer out there who barely knows how to install a game and set gfx options...it just strikes me as a little lazy on their part.
