Unreal 2 help

I have just started to get sued to the unreal 2 editor how ever i am not sure where to put the .utx files when i have compiled lets say a replacement texture.

Does any one know if there is a folder i need to add?
I currently put my .utx file in the /textures folder but it doesnt seem to
change anything.

also, why would placing a texture package have any effect?
