I personally think that using shovel as weapon would be a very good idea. There have been many times when instead of reloading or starting to shoot without aiming i would have just wanted to pick my shovel and smash enemy in to his head, that would be realistic. (no, shovel is much more dangerous and more effective then stock of the gun)
Even using my gun to reflect melee attacks would be a good idea too.

Every FPS should also have the melee combat (or one comparable to) the one of Dark Messiah. Pleease?

Stab, punch and kick! Bite! Think of all the fun situations that would create! Combine that with dragging your wounded team-mate, and you might have to shoot your pistol at enemies who are trying to bite your comrade while you drag him to safety!

Zombies. Arararar. Although I believe it was established that dragging was a bad idea.

Back on topic, while punching is good, I'd like to take this a step further into the realm of grappling. Specifically, how about grabbing, choking, gouging etc?

i think ur stamina should a get a 10sec boost of adrenaline (ur stamina goes up enough to sprint/melee quickly/whatever for 5-10sec) ... only if u get shot or bashed but not enough to kill/KO u...

By any weapon? This only really makes sense for the MP-40 and Luger. If you get hit by a Kar-98K or M1898/30, an MG-38/42 or a DP-28, you sit down. Hard.

well... if they don't hit u in the head or chest.... but... even getting knocked down... u should be able to get up fast... and run away or fight back a for a little bit....

this would only work if they add dynamic stamina effects like switching weapons slower, reloading slower, getting up slower.. and so on

i do agree though... anything bigger than a mp-40 or maybe a PPsh... u would hurtin real fast

Grappling and other stuff is very dynamic in real life, there is almost no way you can transfer that over to a first person shooter.
Combat in games never is very dynamic, at least not believeably so like it would be in real life.
And how would it be decided who wins the grapple? Push the melee-button first and you win? Buttonmash? Not really my idea of fun melee, plus in the time it takes you to grapple and choke an enemy you can easily catch a bullet.
I'm in no way bashing the idea, it appeals to me as well, but i can't see a good practical (or fun) way to implement it. Therefor i wouldn't get my hopes up.

Get back up? **** NO. A Mosin Nagant or Kar 98k will blow a hole the size of a small child's fist in you, and that's just the entry wound. If you get hit in the stomach, good night. If you get hit in the arm your arm would be screwed, your weapon dropped, and you rolling on the ground in pain, and if you get shot in the leg... well... that's it. Thanks for playing, have fun dragging yourself around with your arms and one leg, the other leg being basically a dead weight that you can use if you REALLY need to. An MP-40 would cause serious problems too, it just doesn't have the stopping power of a rifle, machine gun or the STG. So basically, this is a bad idea- no stanima boost upon being hit.

What I suggested a long time ago for Ostfront when this discussion came up was for melee-only weapons to be emergency use only. Basically, the player should have to have had all of their firearms shot from their hands. Voluntary dropping of weapons to have access to the melee weapons (shovel or knife, whatever) should be prohibited, leaving players to have to engage in melee combat with their existing firearms if they so have to.

BAD idea. Taking options away from the player = no.

Could'nt agree more.

Melee is available when you have your firearm in the form of buttsmacks and bayos. You don't want people running out of spawn swinging a shovel or knife (whackwhackwhackwhack ad.nauseum ala dod). Of course you'll still get the 'hey, shoot my weapon away so I can rambo with my shovel hurrr' type stuff. People will find their ways of being goofy and having fun but TF2 this game is not.

For those who feel vulnerable during reload, maybe having the ability to override the current action and swing your gun stock or use your bayo mid-reload would be an option.. *shrug*

Having rudementary grappling is better than no grappling. I don't expect the controls to have to be fun, as that isn't really the focus of the game - this isn't Red Orchestra: Ultimate Fighting Championship.

So in that context, button mash would be fine. Maybe something simple like, whoever button mashes enough (maybe change it up with button mashing left or right to throw them down that way) wins the grapple. At that point, your avatar automatically is on top, chokes or kicks your opponent in the head for a lights out.

Sounds like wrestling games, who ever pushes A the fastest :D
However death because of grappling, I think it would just annoy me. I would rather take some damage and get pushed away, giving me a chance to escape or fight back after. Of course if I had like 20 life, I would probably die from the grappling fight.

The problem with that is you need an endpoint. Otherwise half the team could end up grappling one on one instead of getting the job done. Once you're choked out or kicked in the head or whatever, you are incapacitated and done. If you want to be more graphic, eye gouging could also be done, which would effectively put you out of the game too.

Or simply, if you loose your rifle, you always have a knife. Disarming a knife is really really hard, so have it not disarmable.
