My concern is that if we provide an option (client or server) to turn it off, you will have a dead silent battlefield. So I think a solution/improvement rather than a simple removal of the feature should be considered.

Oh My, that's an exaggerated example. If you don't hear the explosions, shooting and ambient combat sounds, then that's sad. I use my directional sound system to help detect where the enemy is by where the sound of the shot(s) come from and by staying alert watching for movement. ;)

I meant silent regarding human voices, I thought that was obvious ;)

Don't worry, it was perfectly obvious by context.

And it's largely why I'm in favor of keeping the current system, although some tweaks could be good. The simplest one I can think of is to add a simple LoS check onto the existing range-check for calling out to buddies.
