In WWII there were also mostly bolts, but as you can see in RO it doesn't necessarily have to be that way ingame.

Actually if you change the weapons in RO (not all of them like the K98) to WWI weapons and make some new maps with lots of trenches you would have a WWI game. And there were tanks in WWI, they were just fortified tractors. There were also smg weapons. It doesn't necessarily have to be WWI style, WWII with WWI weapons would be fun.

Nope, that one's gotta go too, as they used the G98 back then (same rifel, but longer, the bayonet was also more like a sword than a knife..), same with the Mosin, the WWI Mosin was longer than the 91/30 by 6 inches or so.

My guess if it's going to be a WWI one thing it is going to be called "Red Opera: Ostfront 1914-1917"
(I dunno I just love the title and the game could be fun )

If it is going to be Korean War I claim for ever to be the guy who came up first with this scenario

Or how about a "what if" scenario; heavy street fighting in Moscow, and a large scale Soviet assault in the ruins of Washington DC / New York, and STG44 with night vision, and the Maus tank, and, and....

Soviets invading America... there has never been an FPS that has done that as far as I know. Add in the realism of RO, and you have a very interesting game.

How about this: "Oil Wars". It could take place in the year 2020 with Russia and America battling in the arctic (where all the ice is currently melting IRL and exposing potential huge resources of oil). Oh yeah, oil.. ain't in grand! The game could be rebranded for American sale though; here it could be called "freedom fighters" {saving the world from evil} to make thing more palatable.

No, most Americans are past the stupid world freedom savior thing and are returning to a jaded simmering hatred of our politicians.

I hope, considering they choose to make another FPS, that melee plays a big part. I don't think we've ever seen a very nicely polished melee system in an FPS.. at least I havent. More than just striking and hitting what you've aimed at, but also blocking, parrying, feinting... or rather

Ho, ha-ha, guard, turn, perry, dodge, spin, ha, thrust!

You would not believe how many people are completely incapable of critical thinking and make their judgements solely based on what they are told combined with their innate emotionally protective / self righteous one sided world view. What you end up with is justification of anything and everything which is like I said a device people invent to protect themselves emotionally from the brutal truth of events done in their name. But this is sidetracking into a new topic.....

the best melee system I've seen is the one in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (at least in single player), it may not be realistic, but its fun like no other

Yeah its cool, but a bit simplistic still.
It would be great if someone invented a system that goes deeper then Dark Messiah's. (great game though, im not bashing anything)

Yeah, some kind of ancient weapons FPS where your mouse actually controls the weapon in 3-D space. You could have things like jousting on horseback, throwing spears, using large pikes, or that ball and chain thing from Castlevania (dating myself a bit with that one :p). A plethora of swords of course, or you could even have bows and arrows of different types. However, instead of the simple point and click button mashing, your mouse would actually control the weapon in a free-aim 3-D space type of fashion - so there wouldnt be a small set of animations, but a rather large set. You could swing your mouse in an upward half-moon motion and you would see the sword make that exact move on screen. Much like the pilot of an Apache helicopter, wherever his head moves the chaingun underneath the copter moves the same - it would be like that but with your mouse... the actual movements you make with the mouse would translate to your weapon on the screen.

For defense you would have to hold the right click while making mouse movements, or something like that. This way, you could strike at small specific areas on an opponent, and just generally have way more control over your fighting. There could be stamina qualifiers and such so that if you made too many big, wild and heavy strikes with your sword, while wearing armor (or not), your guy becomes tired and is barely able to defend himself... in this way there are many things to think about when in battle so the depth of play and skill needed would depend on the player. It could even be set in many different types of locales or periods in time... like feudal Japan, or the wild west with Indians, or Midevil Europe... whatever. Yeah, we need a badass melee FPS with a deep combat system. There's a genre that hasnt been fully recognized. What we DONT need is another modern combat game *YAAAAWWN*
