I know this will get filed under "it's none of your business," but do we know for a fact that TWI is, in fact, getting money off of IJC?

Wilson's been saying it's been going back to the community/IJC.

Either he's telling the truth, and TWI isn't taking any of the sales (barring any expenses they might have to pay to Steam; not sure how the system works), or Wilson's been lying.

I'd like to give TWI the benefit of the doubt.

It'd safe to say TWI will get some amount of share from it for time spent polishing/hosting/steam charges. But I'm pretty sure the vast majority will go to the IJC crew.

Expansion pack for BF1942?

Are we counting expansion packs? The line is blurry, but the start does exist. I just think it's silly for TWI to deny that they have taken a step down the path of paid DLC with paid DLC selling right now, even if currently a purportedly "nice deal" is being given to the modders.

Really? Remind me of a game where EA paid modders. Or gave them modding tools. Or even allowed console commands or map tools. Or listened to customer feedback and interacted with them on the forums.

Shall I go on?

No? Good. Now stop blowing this out of proportion just because you can't grasp a solid concept that's good for the mod community.
You are still missing the point. I don't care where the money goes, they are selling 4 (four) weapons at a high price

It's only a high price if you are poor. I mean seriously, as someone on another thread pointed out it's the cost of a pint of beer (actually over here it's much cheaper than a pint of beer!), it's nothing.

Wow, are you ACTUALLY using that argument? Not only it's an ad hominem, but it's also ethically wrong.

Some of the analogies and points of reference being made by some "current" forum users are totally astounding.

Where on earth do people think KF came from?
TWI showed yet again their willingness to support a modder and his team.
If people are going to argue that DLC being paid to a modder is just not right then they best stop playing KF right now or risk being burned at the stake as heretics.
Because KF was born of a mod and that team were and are paid for people buying it..lol..And the stupidity of some the remarks comparing TWI to EA I would have found insulting if I were a TWI staff member but the likelehood is that like me they fell about laughing at the sheer dumbness of the comparison..lol..EA..lol I mean EA..roflol..

The truth is you have a choice..Buy the DLC or don't buy it..Support a mod team or don't support it..either way you at least have a choice and will not be thrown of a server if you choose not to buy.

I got up this morning and unsurpisingly the sky had still not fallen down and the world was still turning and KF was still being played and enjoyed by thousands and thousands of people and I was happy in the knowledge that a very talented mod team were starting get some very deserved reward for all their hard work over the last few years..And long may TWI continue to provide that support and vision to those with the talent to bring new content to its community.

Now this one elicits an "Oh, grow up" from me. EA put out packs that, if you don't have the content you get tossed off a server - or that allow you to kill other players better; they charge $15-20 - AND they keep all the money.

If you don't have these weapons you can still play with everyone who has them. You can pick up one that has been dropped by another player and use it. The weapons are side-grades (and if we missed something there, we'll tweak them, just like we do with other weapons) - and it is a co-op game, so no-one can use these weapons to kill people who don't have them. We're charging (at full price) $2 a weapon. And (yes, of course the details are covered by NDA) the IJC guys are going to do nicely out of the deal, courtesy of all those who have bought the pack, putting it in the top 10 in the Steam sales chart on its own! We're taking enough to (hopefully) cover our own costs.

This is another step (along with the work on Steam workshop) towards rewarding the people who make stuff like this, so that MORE people will be attracted to make MORE stuff for you to play with. Thousands of people have already voted with their wallets to push money through to the community members who put the months in (and it has been months - we're very particular about quality) to make this for you. 10s of people are getting all bent out of shape about "pay to win" and "pulling an EA" - neither of which make any sense.

I completely agree, KF has free content coming out in a way very few other games have, TWI does a great job.

There's no other company that supports modders in a such a way that I know of, I truly wish others would follow.

Comparing TWI to EA is a JOKE, and also pisses me off.

As an former EA consumer (BF3 being my last purchase) I can guarantee TWI is nowhere close to that company.

EA leaves bugs in their games and make a joke out of it's community, BF3 has no in-game voip for pc, this is ridiculous, not to mention the bugs and glitches and the blue filter controversy.

OH FFS
It has nothing to do with who gets the money, the problem is WHAT is sold. There wouldn't be a ****storm if those were just skins.

They are selling a weapon pack at an unreasonable price (not that anything more than free is reasonable), it's more insulting for the consumer than calling them "EA" will ever be to them.
That's more than enough to call for the comparison, and it's damn well deserved.

This is game mechanic modifying paid DLC. I don't care what spin you put on it - that is still what it is when the charge goes on the card. The analogies to EA are not completely unwarranted... it's a small step but it is a step in the same direction. The vehement repulsion at the idea that TWI can be at all comparable to EA is amusing but silly. They're just experimenting with things that a publisher would probably make them be doing by now anyway.

Right now, the modders seem to be getting the dosh, but things may change. (I also wonder, is it just for the sale that they get it all and then perhaps once it's back up to normal price there's a split or something?) Maybe they won't do this again, but no examples come to mind of companies flirting with paid mechanic DLC and turning back...

Bottom line: this is game mechanic changing paid DLC. EA is notorious for this and is regarded as one of if not the herald of it. The analogy is obvious.

Back to my holidays! :D

ps : You dont like optional DLC? Don't buy it. You think they are OP? Impossible after 3 days of release, you need more testie testie..lookie lookie in KFmod file yes....no stupid youtubes yes yes.

Conclusion : You just want free stuff. So why not be honest in the future and just say : "Im a parasite of society and want this DLC for free. bye" This way the mods can recognise you more easy on the boards and ban you from the boards without reading a wall of text.

see yall, have fun now kids!

So not being a mindless drone buying absolutely everything because he is told so is being a parasite now?

I wish the world was full of these parasites then, because the others help bring cancer to said "parasites" against their will.

The dude in your pic that you like to portray yourself as seems a bit "overreacting" btw. Did he get his back on a wall due to relentless arguments.

Did you even read this thread? This is the wrong one to be posting in about the power of the DLC weapons - the theme is about the act of selling game mechanic and skill changing weapons. The ability to win is a part of that point, yes, but there is more to it than that. It's about precedent and reputation as the title says. Your gif would be better suited elsewhere.

I like the new content.

You know what annoys me though:

When I go to purchase the DLC through Steam I can only buy one at a time, complete a full transaction, then have to do it again.

So, if I want to whip out my credit card and buy 30 of them for my clan and friends, there is no drop down box option to buy more than 1 and at checkout there is no option to buy more than 1.

What did support modders a great deal was the workshop integration and now the change that mutators are automatically graylisted! Good job on that! What would also support modders is a better whitelisting method but I hear tell you're working on that too. Good.
(if you could also fix the custom emitters crashing servers.. that'd be great too)

But this Weapon DLC? This isn't supporting modders, this is hiring some as freelancers, and not even on your own dime but on the back of the community. Let's call a spade a spade.

And as a player I really don't care from which pot you take what money. You're charging ME money for game addons. I was happy to pay for skins I didn't need because it has always been an understanding between players and TWI that these Skin DLCs are a way of supporting the FREE content updates that actually matter. I.e. maps and weapons.
I see you released even more of those! Again, good.

But the weapon DLC isn't part of the deal anymore! I was happy to pay for skins I didn't want precisely because you DIDN'T ask for money for the new weapons and maps.

I consider it impolite that you changed this now. With all due gratefulness for the new free content.

Now that is stupid. Do you really think we will keep on raging like that? This is just to keep TWI on the right tracks. If they continue this way even though we warned them, we will just drop support. As in, stop giving them money.
They should be happy to be even WARNED.
Consumerism 101. The smarts don't buy and those who casually buy will drop support as soon as someone else convince them they are shinier, whereas the former would have stayed in if it weren't alienated by a bad move.
