Trapped, many zeds, help.
Oh god the spelling and grammatical mistakes make my head hurt and my eyes ache.

But no. I cannot under any circumstances condone the use of the M14.

If you heal and weld mainly, consider going medic. I played as sharpshooter for a long time before realising medic was more fun.

As a medic i can keep the whole team alive.

Medics are great. :D
****ing agree, i love Medic!

(Note: this post applies to hard difficulty, lvl 6 medic)

If you cut corners well and hop around when you think he's close enough to melee, you can usually evade his attack and then counter attack.

If you do get meleed, between getting thrown forward, running really fast, and still having some super armor left, you can usually get behind cover and heal as he tries to Gatling gun you.

When you successfully evade him, it's time for a couple Xbow head shots; ideally, eye-shots. Hopefully you can goad him into a couple of ranged attacks, so you can evade them and shoot some more bolts his way. When he rushes you again, it's time to find a circuit to run it. Preferably, a circuit with doors, so you can continually close them in his face.

When he runs off to heal, you usually won't be able to finish him off, but you can keep his aggro focused on you by aggressively chasing him down and firing at him.

Using these techniques, an Xbow Medic can solo the Patriarch on a 6-man hard server. (If you can manage not to lose your concentration from laughing at all the whining demomen hiding behind their pipe bombs on the other side of the map.) I've entirely solo'd him on WestLondon and BioticsLab, hard, 6-man servers. Everywhere else, other people will join me in the game of cat and mouse.

The main threats are underestimating the rockets, not staying where cover/corners are available, and getting meleed when you've no super armor left. (not an instant kill, but with < 10 HP, it's very unlikely/difficult to find cover before getting hit with the few subsequent Gatling gun shots it takes to finish you off)

Never allow him to Gatling Gun you, even at long range where he usually misses. You can get some easy Xbow headshots doing it, but the armor loss isn't worth it. Find cover, and hop out the moment he stops firing.

"You sure are good at running away!"

Wall of text incoming, and i apologise in advance.

When sharpshooter, grab an Xbow and hunt down the patty. No point letting him heal or get the jump on you. Keep the pressure on him at all times. It's funny watching people wait for him to come to them. Get him on the run and you can win rather easily.

This also works for medic, although the lesser damage means it takes longer. It's kind of annoying seeing my bolts go straight into his head, only to do very little damage. For me headshots are either very luckily done, or when he's walking towards me.

Although Sharpshooter is an absolute god at owning the patriarch, i had at one time solo'd a 6man strength patriarch on hard with medic wielding an Xbow, on one of the awesome Skeleton's Bone Pile (SBP) servers. I believe i kited the patriarch around the [deserted base night] map and i felt a sense of accomplishment having pulled it off.

I digress.

Some tips:

Aim for the head whenever possible, even with shotguns. Firebug is exempt from this.
A close range shotgun blast to the head does significantly more damage due to the fact the majority of the shot is hitting the head. An AA12 set to full-auto spammed into a Scrake or Fleshpound in close range does more damage when using headshots than bodyshots.

A big help for Sharpshooters. The most effective and easily used combo for a competent player is 9mm, Handcannon and Crossbow. While i know a handful of players can use DHC effectively, i'm not one of them and DHC is absolutely worthless. In my hands at least. xD
9mm is a good backup weapon when the HC is out of ammo either temporarily or permanently as it's damage and recoil make it viable to use. The HC packs enough punch to eliminate most foes without trouble and comes with enough ammo to be used as a main weapon. The Xbow isn't ideally used as your main weapon for everything and anything, but is best used to take out the things you can't remove with the HC quickly, or at all. Notice i gave no tips for the M14, so here's one. Don't use it at all.

Commando is perfectly fine with full auto on everything. Using bursts to kill specimens with Bullpup or AK47, then switching to your SCAR that you kept in full auto just for scrakes and FPs.

A tip for removing Scrake infestations as commando: Empty your full-auto weapon of choice into the scrake, dropping it to half-health. Then pull out your auto SCAR and empty that into it's head. This will take roughly half a mag from each weapon, and given enough space can leave you unharmed or slightly injured. This isn't advisable on smaller maps in confined spaces.

Demo: Aim for the middle of groups, try to pull out your 9mm for single specs to conserve ammo. Do not spam your GLs. This is wasteful and should only be used as a last resort. Remember that you have 11 grenades magically attached to your body, and that you don't have to rely on your M79/M32 all the time for everything.

Medic: Have you used the Xbow before? Do you know the trick to hitting lon range targets with it? Good. The MP7 works very similarly to the Xbow in that the projectile speed is subsonic, and takes a small amount of time to reach it's target. A good medic will have the MP7/Xbow combo to eliminate pretty much anything that everyone else can't/won't handle.
If you can, put yourself in front of the specs attacking your teammates, except for the Fleshpound. No point putting yourself in front of this one, he's already got a target in mind. Scrakes like to change targets a lot though :)

Berserker: I've got nothing for this one, except this. You're a berserker with a 9mm for a reason. You can kill crawlers with it if you don't feel confident to tease them.

Firebug: Today i saw someone spamming the FT and i thought: "he'll run out of ammo quickly playing like that" and guess what? He did run out of ammo. Now i, and other people floating around forums like myself say this: tap, tap tap the flamethrower, don't hold it down unless it's an emergency. I'm not an expert on this perk's use, so i'm probably not right about tapping it, ask for a second opinion on this one.

If you read this then gratz. You learnt something xD

Tapping is pretty much the best thing you can do, tap slower if your enemies are far away, and start tapping faster as soon as they get too close :p
Also if you're going with firebug, I recommend that you start as a berserker (if your lvl 4,5,6) for the first wave, buy a katana and change to firebug and proceed.

I prefer to keep SCAR on semi-auto, 1 shot is normally enough to kill weak things and at longer range you get more control over the shots to kill things like Husks or Sirens.

And if possible impact the grenade on a target not on the floor since it does extra damage.

Nice post. Just want to add a few points.

Dual handcannons is for when you almost get runned over. 16 bullets go a long way when it comes to finishing off a wounded scrake / FP or to cut a way trough a horde of lesser zeds.
9mm is your main weapon as SS. Xbow for scrake, FP, husk and siren (or multikill), dual HC when the sh1t hits the fan.

Zerker has only 1 useful loadout. (suicidal, friendly fire on) Xbow and katana. Hipshoot crawlers with xbow. You can pick up most of the bolts you spend this way. Aimed shot at FPs head, then hip shot just before he hits you. If you run out of ammo, then your SS / commando sucks.

edit: I always go support with aa12 and xbow for Pat. 11 nades (at level 6) with 50 % dmg bonus + some aa12 spam and a few xbow headshots can deal a lot of dmg.

disclaimer: My aim sucks bigtime, so SS with xbow might be a better choise for you.

out run patty on hard and below

out run patty on hard and below

lvl 6 medic can easily outrun patty on hard and below, on suicidal i'm not sure but i think its still somewhat easily possible.

Bunnyhop. All you need to do to outrun patty as lvl 6 medic with ease. Ofc try go in straight line so you get more distance.

Yes you move FASTER when bunnyhopping than if you walk normally. So do it walking to trader or trying to outrun anything.

Ofc disadvantage to bunny hopping is manoeuvrability.

But lvl 6 medic, bunny hopping around can avoid all pattys melee atks easily.

As long as the medic has a means of killing it ofc, Preferably xbow, yes even with xbow weight, you can out bunny hop patty with ease (as lvl 6 medic i stress again)

Soloed patty many times on hard in a 6 man game.
