@Cyper

I find it a bit odd that you state "Realism shines" but then point out the negatives for you which for the most part only really exist in Realism mode like XP, perks and all sort of HUD aides which are absent in Classic mostly.

Are you sure you are not getting confused with the different modes?;)

As someone who is still playing Ostfront and Darkest Hour, I really have to disagree. Ro2 and Ost play completely differently, with few similarities.

+1.

The Gestalt Effect is lost in threads like this. I really miss the encompassing and massive war-like feel as opposed to the spastic skirmish-arena-like feel.

Maybe its because to walk 100m took you the better part of 5 minutes is why it felt "massive." But of course realism doesn't matter when it comes to dat "RO1 feel."

:rolleyes: Well, massive maps generally do contribute to a massive feeling.

I guess I just loved meandering 72 hours to the far corner of the map where no players were because the map was so unintelligibly disorganized. Then randomly spotting an enemy that I can't see because he's only a pixel on my monitor. Then having to compensate for Parkinson's sway with recoil that pointed my gun at Alpha Centauri; which was the fault of my avatar for not acquiring enough level ups, not my own ability to skillfully operate the gun or tactically position myself. Let's not even mention the fact that my avatar ran as fast as Stephen Hawkings and had the stamina of Bernie Mac running up the Empire State Building while chain smoking Marlboro Reds. I just can't appreciate the realism of bionic-cyborg-zoom runs faster than a cheetah turns faster than a figure skater obviously guns in ww2 had no recoil super soldats had no sway MG rambo spawn killing on the same side of a cardboard box eschew objectives for 1337 K/D and winter trigger unlocks type gameplay.

Sorry to be a jackass, but grossly hyperbolic rants are how I reply to bitter little backhanded quips. Especially ones that serve no purpose other than to poke at someone who has an opinion that's not yours.

I will say that since it has been available on Linux, I've been firing up Osty a lot more than on my Windows box.

What has been revealing for me was I never knew Rakowice and Stalingradkessel that well on the original, so it was interesting to go back and compare having played them a fair bit on the custom map servers.

Something is definitely missing from RO2. I can't quite put my finger on it. The RO1 world seems a little richer.
