Yeah maybe that was it. But it isn't uncommon to spend more than the development on marketing.
BF3 and its insane 100million marketing budget is one example of this.

Ahem my websitenobody seems to care unless its BF3 or COD8
word of mouth, gameplay, and support are gonna sell this game. and the RO2 buzz is dying off fast
the folks ive talked into looking at this game are starting to fade in the onslaught of bf3 footage
Well, with only one decent trailer, and another trailer with only tad bits of footage; what would you expect the peoples choice to be? Once the game comes out and people don't have to rely on the Devs to give them info, then the ratings will rise.
I have to agree with Tom Hanks, Cinematic trailers, and spoof comercials aren't going to cut it. There needs to be uninterupted gameplay footage, with no music dubbed on top (in game music is fine), and NO BACKGROUND DIALOGUE. Quality Audio....
ITT:
1) People who have no clue how expensive marketing is. RO2 marketing has already been said to cost more than its development.
2) People who don't understand the expense just to have an ad on a webpage.
3) People who don't get that TWI is small, and even sparing on guy to make a gameplay video and edit it will put other features on hold.
this is why ive finely given up on IGN, i've been going to them for something like 15 years... now the only places I go for info and good reviews are sites like rockpapershotgun.com / destructoid.com / joystiq.com
and getting an intelligent commentary on what goes on around these big games and companies is interesting as well, add to that some really intelligent reviews and info on indie games you would never have heard of
I picked up RO because I heard how good it was from another player whos tastes I shared and played with on a combat sim. Thats how this game will spread too, but not only between sims. It'll be the people who hear about RO from friends, clanmates, and the oddball PC playing co-worker who smells of ramen.
Heck I would bet a couple PC guys who only play COD/BF3 will eventually look into RO2 the first time they hear their clanmate screaming in joy over vent after mowing down a squad with an mg burst. Or hitting someone with a bolt action from 300m away while they were at a full sprint.
These types of word of mouth will spread the game. Heck I played CS:S until someone introduced me to OFP. After my first time AT'ing a tank I never went back to action/arcades style shooters. Don't be so quick to write off a COD player or BF3 player as a future RO player.
The gameplay is different but most people have never played anything aside from COD. Give em a chance and they may love barrel overheating and other realistic features, it adds grittyness and gives you a chance to charge that facist between barrel swaps.![]()
