Alright,

My computer is in need of a upgrade it is old...

I am liking the new AMD APUs (CPU + GPU Combo ) that just came out.

I am planning to get a new build by the end of next month just for RO2 :)

AMD A8-3850 Llano 2.9GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168202313112x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

XFX HD-667X-ZAF3 Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit

ASUS F1A75-V PRO FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Grand Total $453.72

My Plan is to reuse my current parts (Hard drives, Case, etc)

Tell me what you think :)

Well, I'm going to quote Floyd on this one because I think his method works well..

The easy and short answer is to let someone else figure it out for you...:p

This link will help to determine the total wattage you may need. Its free.

For two bucks you can download the 'Pro' version that will tell you by rail. Then the trick is to find the specs of the PSU you're interested in before you buy it.

I'm no master builder or pro, but only once have I had a PSU that failed to provide the power needed on a rail. Iirc it was an Antec Neo-power PSU. And to be fair, it was an older model (though unused) PSU I was trying to put into a newer Asus AMD board. The AMD cpu took more power than the PSU was rated for.

As he says, it's about figuring out what each rail can handle compared to what your new hardware requires, and then, in my opinion, you want a touch more oomph on top of that.

Ok sounds good - But newegg has one of these should I use that one or the one recommended by floyd?

Well, it's up to you. It looks like you can get by with the one you have, but personally I like to have a bit of overhead, like 100 watts more than I need just cause I dont like to cut it close. In the end, the budget always dictates things like this.

my current power supply is 600 Watts should i upgrade or no?

I am thinking about upgrading the power supply

Do it. Get at least 750, so you've got some available overhead for upgrades.

Also, since you live on Skullcrusher Mountain (in a secret lair, I presume) you'll want some extra power for when you make the monkey / pony hybrid monster. That takes a fair amount of juice.

but the thing is with the Monkey pony monster is that i have used too many monkeys already PETA is on to me as well as the local villagers. :p

anyway I found a decent power supply for about $74.99

It is a 700 Watt PSU the most likely thing that i would be doing with it is just adding another monitor and i do not think that it draws power as it has its own power supply

I do intend on doing Cross fire X however since the new APUs are Crossfire X Capable and give a bit of extra juice out when you have the proper card.

I would possibly reconsider on the llano if I were you, Im not completely sure but Ive seen some benchies that had it performing around my q6600. The upside of the llano is that it has the built in card that you can xfire with a dedicated gfx card so your video card performance will be good.

edit: Also this toms hardware review of the 6670 ( keep in mind that review is using an i7 K series cpu ) cites the game getting around 50 fps on medium settings no aa Bulletstorm ( Bullet storm uses ue 3.5 ).
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-6570-radeon-hd-6670-turks,2925-6.html

Yes you would be x firing that 6670 with the llano, but the llano is no where near the cpu that an i7 is.

( I'm really busy today otherwise I'd probably part you out something in or around your price range with a bit more oomf)

My advice would be to double your RAM.
Get two 4GB sticks. I don't think you'll regret it.
Imo, its just too cheap to pass up.....

(But if they must, 4GB should suffice)

from what Ive heard ATI cards seem to run arma better, a 6000 series like a 6870 or so should run arma 2 quite well.

Performance to dollar wise you might want to consider a black edition of a phenom x4 or x6 CPU, they are less expensive than an i7 and the few people I know with an X4 have theirs around 3.9ghz.

Aside: Arma 2 will utilize up to 4 cores ( the other two will probably sit around 50% max ), so a 6 core system might be a better bet as its likely arma 3 will only use even more cores.

I think the SB have much better raw CPU performance.

While the Llano is a more balanced and "better" CPU, with better integration, multitasking and much better graphics chip. It would be my choice for a laptop or a cheap PC that can do everything.

But for a gaming desktop PC I'd probably go SB, or wait and see what the AMD Bulldozers can do, and then probably wait 2 more months for the Ivy Bridge ones.

While the Current Radeons run the current ARMA games better - They are overhauling their physics engine for ARMA 3. I believe to take advantage of PhysX for its physics (ragdolls, etc.)

I am really thinking about going Nvidia just for ARMA 3 and I also use the UDK (Unreal Development Kit) for various projects and that uses various things that run better on Nvidia cards. If someone could recommend me a decent Nvidia Card it would be appreciated :)

but anyway here is my current build that i plan to buy

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core

BIOSTAR TH67B LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s Micro ATX

XFX HD-657X-ZHF2 Radeon HD 6570 1GB

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333

XIGMATEK NRP-PC702 700W ATX12V v2.3 SLI

Grand Total - 533.66

Edit - Updated my Parts list.

One other thing I just found out about yesterday is that you can make ram drives for games like arma. Meaning its the equivalent of having something better than an SSD, but you of course require a decent hunk of ram.

I've no idea how easy that is to do, you might want to google around a bit and if its decently easy to make a ram drive for a game ( loads game files into excess ram ), then you might consider going to 12 Gig's.
