Not to imply that this is the case because so many of you are experiencing the problem, but I have had older Nvidia cards do very similar things shortly before they died. Never overheated either.

It might be a problem with NVidia cards running on WinXP
@Justin MacDuro: Didn't help for me, I'm afraid
In fact, the NVidia recommended setting was the same as the global one, so it didn't change anything really.
I'll try to experiment with some of the settings though, I usually stick with globals for all games but have a slight suspicion AA might be a problem, will try turning it off.
