i'm also stating that they need a game mechanic to make shots of over 100 meters much more simple then eye destroying pixel hunting or their game will be a joke and as far from realistic as you like 8)

I like the zoom in Arma, I like it in RO2. It feels more real than trying to shoot individual pixels. It feels like everything's the size it should be in real life, zoomed out mode is to give a better FOV.
Also, you rarely shot someone from beyond 100 meters in RO1, even if it felt like it was further away. In RO2 I've managed to get (lucky) SMG kills at 120 meters, which is within the effective range of those guns.

This isn't some CoDification technique being used by the devs to get more sales, games of this type have been doing this for years. Battleground Europe does it comparably to RO2, and ArmA 2 does it as well. I've seen this debate on the Bohemia forums dozens of times and it always ends with people accepting that this technique is more preferable than having an army of near sighted people on the battlefield. It seems people are nit-picking with this.

I like it. I opens up more options in combat and allows you to use all sights within 10m. For instance, I have a 90 FOV with no zoom set. This simulates looking "past" your sights. If I need to focus on a distant target and line up a shot, I have the "shift" zoom for that.

i'm saying that just as the developers said viewing things with my own eye would result in that 70 meters being much easier to see across, but through a monitor is looks much longer when it shouldn't. And that the zoom is a practical way of accomodating that fact.

This is a valid consideration we all need to keep in mind. However, I am still of the opinion the current zoom is too much, yet cannot be removed entirely by any means.

Are you joking? If not, have you ever heard of the term "tunnel vision"? If not, do you understand what it means to focus on something? If not, next time you are watching tv, tell me how aware your peripherals are and how focused you are on the tv.

This is replicated. ArmA's done it and it's a fine feature. Nowhere near 'sniper'. Get over yourself.

Stop posting trash and nonsense. There's no such thing as optical zooming with the eyes.

The reason TWI implimented this feature, is because they weren't competent enough to even replicate a proper down-scaling objects with range system that was realistic.

So they went with this. Can't say I'm surpised tho

So you're happy with everyone having a sniper rifle by default?

The zoom should be 1/4 of what it is at MOST.

I agree with the op, this was a moronic idea.

Unless this is Deus Ex and you have eye augmentations you should not have a f***ing 4x zoom acog in your eye.

I know its an option, but why would i want to turn it off? it will just put me at a disadvantage. Same with the manual bolting; i like it but why cripple yourself?

Next time either of you are outside, focus on something in the distance, more than 50 yards away (assuming you have 20/20 vision at least). Notice how you can spot a lot of detail on it once you really focus on it? Notice how you were more oblivious to things in your peripherals while focusing on it? This kind of "zoom" is WHAT YOUR ACTUAL VISION DOES. It's more realistic than pixel hunting, which is only realistic if you're extremely nearsighted.

I could care less. It's not even necessary and if anything it hampers your performance than improves it. I'd rather be able to see my surroundings and ding off shots than be completely unaware of whats going on around me.

The initial iron sights zoom is a god send, the shift zoom is just a bit overkill, but not game breaking nonetheless.

Wait, are you people saying that there is another zoom? Besides the normal ironsight closeup?

By default:

Mouse 2 = Ironsights up, includes a zoom
Shift = Another zoom once you have already pressed mouse 2. This is when your character is focusing on a target and brings his sights right up to eye level.

Most people seem to be taking this zoom feature from the perspective that what they see on screen is an accurate depiction of view distance when in reality the screen is false because it stretches everything to look further away.

So based off their view that the screen's view distance is a real representation of distance, they think that the zoom is a unrealistic feature because it just makes everything larger and easier to hit.
From this perspective I would say, yes that feature is unrealistic.

In reality the screen is unrealistically portraying distance, so the zoom feature is there to give you a more accurate depiction of distance. Which makes it realistic.. because otherwise it would be unrealistic like in RO1 where it was nigh impossible to hit a target much further than 400 meters (which we have yet to experience in RO2). These rifles where ment to be fired well over 600 meters. I only ever did it a few times in RO1. So once we get to see these distances in RO2, I think then you will see the realistic effect it has..

I didn't even get a chance to play the Beta yet, because the game crashes for like 5 or 6 hours now - no chance to do anything. I don't really see auto bolting as a disadvantage, but I don't seem to like the additional zoom - from what I saw in all the gameplay videos. Of course we're able to focus on something, but I don't see the point of comparing focusing and zooming. But that's up to the server options. In RO:OS I only play Darkest Hour with full realism setting - FK servers f.e. In RO2 I will only play full realism settings too. They will solve most of the problems players have now. But imho it's a step back to implement easier game methods, in order to get the people to play the game.

Zooming = Fictional Skill. hey, don't hate...it sells.

Sorry guys, HOS isn't RO. Not even related. TWI should make money on this, which is good for them, as they deserved riches from RO.

The zoom is ridiculous, but is more a statement about the gamers of today, and their need for fictional skill. For a while there, I thought TWI lost touch with the people who kept RO alive for years by doing things like this, but then came to grips and realized its a money thing.

In RO, character models were really small over a distance, so you were looking for moving pixels when searching for enemies far away. I am new to the game, and liked the fact that you had to do this. I am at work, salivating over these forums. The beta activated just as I walked in the door. So...should I be really worried about this "zoom" thing? I understand that this is going to be an OPTION in the real game, so I am not that nervous, but will it make this beta unenjoyable? (I doubt it...RO amazed me with the amount of physics and realism, I came from console shooters and always assumed that bullet drop was not possible, and that was why it didn't exist in console games.)
Offtopic:There were/are some console games with bullet drop.
Although they were/are very rare and most just have it for their sniper rifles.
It's not done because most Console Shooters are copying to much from Halo (which actually understands it's on concepts which the other developers don't do and that's why it's still awesome)

On topic: I haven't experienced any tunnel vision in real life, but i have adhd-pi, so i probably won't experience that extreme focusing anyway.
But i totally agree on normal videogame view&pixelhunt being unrealistic.

I think the zoom is a really good feature, because I always found it somewhat difficult to see along the horizon on games if your monitor isn't a foot away from your face.

I knew somebody would complain about this. The "Zoom" you speak of is the game's way of simulating the human eye focusing on a target (since that's otherwise impossible to do in a video game).

Bravo, captain redundancy. Read the thread, noob. :p

But seriously if you dislike this, you need to realize you're in a miniscule minority. Sorry that this isn't the game for you (in literal terms), but the fact is that most people even in the realistic-FPS / military-sim realm prefer having this "zoom" function.
