What other shape should they be? The greater the mass of an object the more likely it is to becoming spherical as gravity pulls everything towards the center.

Because the pressure caused by the thermo nuclear reaction in the core is, in avrage, evenly distrobuted.

Without the thermo nuclear reaction the star would collapse into a white/red/brown dwarf, neutron star or black hole depending on it's mass. This is what happends when when a star runs out of "fuel" and dies.
