Please put in TWO limits on a server:

1. Mapchange global wait time
2. Round start wait time.

1. Mapchange Global wait time,
initiated the first time after a server has switched map.
During this time, no one can do anything, and certainly not select teams or classes.

2. Round start wait time,
initiated every time a round is about to start. During this time, one can select/change team/classes

This way, Global wait time can be set to ca 40 seconds, and round wait time could be set tup 20 seconds.

Benefits:
One can allow for the slower people to catch up with the faster.
Server admins dont need to put in such long waits between rounds to achieve the first benefit.

iirc this is already in the game (might be wrong though), but there are servers that have 40 Seconds Prestart Duration, while having a normal Pause between Rounds.

No because the first man to join the server can always select his gun.

That is the whole point. I have never once gotten to a server where i couldnt select sniper/auto/mg or whatver, and while this is fun for me, it sucks for the guys with slower computer.

There need to be a time right after the server has changed the map that noone can select weapons.

I am completely opposed to putting in any randomness or such when it comes to weapon selection.

the Home of the Heroes!
you are completly right ghad, and right now I wanted to write a thread with the same topic!
well, I can save the time now! ;)

your topic is hot but maybe I have better solution for the problem:

Sniper/MG limited to one round!
the Sniper (and the MG on some maps) is the most wanted role in each map. So its pretty unfair to let ONE guy have all the fun for full game (normally 3 rounds)

It would be much smarter if after one round the player is forced to pick another class and make the sniper free for anyone else to pick.
If nobody else wants it, he can choose it again after 5 seconds. :D

what do the devs think of this idea?

very easy to do and everyone can have fun which the class he likes most.:)

I've got a solution too: catch up on technology. Does not have to be anything cutting edge - just 2003. Not a big investment.

Wow! Great idea! I'd absolutely love to wait for some technology dropouts for four minutes before getting to choose a class!
I would rather wait a little while for the techno dropouts, than see all the school dropouts (60 seconds per minute anyone?) get all the coolest hardware ;)

The problem on the idea is that some people have loading times of 2-3 minutes. I doubt that all the other players want to wait that long.

A compromise would maybe be that after the map ends every class gets released, so that everybody has to pick his class new. Most maps are played two or three times in a row.

Sniper and MG are the hardest weapons to use propperly.... If your connection sucks its not the games fault....

* @ Hyperion - yeah I was going to mention that it won't be too fun for you when your team's sniper is missing due to horrid fps, but everyone should get a turn on the pony.

I'm not sure there is a solution to this issue.

-Increase Global wait time?

Even if you made everyone wait, the specialty classes would go to those with the fastest click. It would be mad clicking dash - be better to just flip a coin. I'm not sure how much better that is, but I suppose it's equal footing.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but perhaps it should be based on merit i.e. if your k:d ratio or kills per minute drops below a certain level you could be 'demoted' to a lesser class?

Again, I don't really think there is a perfect answer to this - it's just the nature of the beast.

Let's every class licensed for a given amount of death modified by the points you get while you use it. For example, you have to give up the sniper after you have been killed three times except you gain enough points to prolong your licence. Then the next people get the class on the waiting list of that class.

i think the idea of forcing a sniper or mg to give up their class would work best if the game looked at how many of the shots that were fired actually hit another player (or bot) and if someone's hit percentage is below a certain number the game forces them to select another class so they can stop "stinking up the sniper slot"

I really like your second suggestion. I personally have never gotten to use a sniper rifle myself because I had never been able to join fast enough.

Also, I always thought of a way to give others a chance to use different guns is to rework a squad/reinforcement system. I think a certain number people have to die before they can have a chance to respawn (meanwhile they are in black out screen). Once those certain number of people die, they get taken to the class selection screen where they get to choose their weapons based on the size/type of their squad (like 3 rifle men, 1 sniper, 1 mg, etc.) Certain guns would be more readily available , and the squad would consist of 4-8 people. That way others can have a chance to use certain guns, especially when the sniper dies.

*@ other thread - yeah I was actually thinking of something just like that, but I didn't know how complicated it would be to have a server have to keep track of class requests and time requested etc. etc. That would be cool I guess - like a server browser continuing to try and join a full server.

Firstly, you definitely do not want to penalize MGs for hit percentage - supresive fire anyone? :)

You do want the best players with the best tools so I think, if anything, weapons should be earned/lost based on some sort of merit.

Yeah, I rarely get my hands on a sniper rifle unless it's dropped. Last night I got my shot (pun intended) and I SUCKED. lol I was so unacustomed to the scope that for some reason I was missing every shot even though I was sure the target was centered. I was so dissapointed that I blew such a golden opportunity that I switched to a bot-match and practiced with the sniper rifle for about 1.5 hrs. Funny thing is by the time I get another chance I'll have forgotton all that I learned ;).

That squad idea is interesting to be sure, but it might be overly complicated. I do like the idea of players being grouped into squads and the commanders having more command options, but that's a different thread I'm afraid.

not to be a jerk but why punish people with fast computers? sure i load first 99% of the time but i dont always grab sniper or mg, (or whatever the limited class is) like for instance on kaukasus i could always grab the mg or smg class but i love my trusty m38, plus even when i dont pick lets say sniper, if he dies and im next to him i take it off of his corpse and pretty much hold it for the rest of the round, its not hard

Why punish players with slower computers?

My loading time is average (<1min), but still most of the rare classes are gone after I connect to the server. I don't have great problems with it as I prefer most of the time playing with rifle anyways.

However if I would like to try other classes out like MG or sniper, then there is no way for me execpt someone with this class leaves the server.

All players with average or slow computers, which are probably the majority of players, have a severe disadvantage rigth now in enjoing RO with all it's features in my opinion.

Therefore I think something has to be done to make this situation fairer.
