Hmm.. I'm pretty sure the 'no fur' activists would also say that they'd rather the animals didn't die for your dinner table either. If not then that's some kind of hypocrite. So I'm confused by your confusion that we should all be sporting leather boxer briefs just because cow is so damn yummy and their skin happens to be 'very durable'.

Besides, almost every part of the cow is used in some way after slaughter - especially the hide. They don't throw away hardly any of it.. the cartilage/tendons, the bones, the innards.. it all gets used.

All the crops grown to feed the cows before they're slaughtered could feed a ton of people. But then those people would be vegetarians, so the plan is unworkable.

When we go and buy a whole cow all you have to do is ask for the hide and they will give it to you for free...

Perhaps they use all of it locally but not where I live. The idea I was getting at was that seeing the big picture is sometimes necessary and a compromise in one area may very well help you in others.

Whether to eat the cow or not is a different matter, however if you want to axe something else first that has driven the price of food up aim for corn based ethanol. (Edit: we also buy grassfed beef, this maniacal concept of feedlotting animals and finishing diets is not only worse for the meat taste / quality, but does as you stated take up a lot of other good food)

Boxer briefs out of leather? pff no, but there are a lot of places where leather could be put to good use ...

Well, I don't know where you get your 'whole cow' from but I do know that slaughterhouses sell basically the entire cow. The bones for bone meal (an agricultural additive), blood for blood meal, my dog used to eat what were called 'Bully Sticks' which were basically dried cow tendons, and of course the hide for leather. Everything on the cow has a monetary value and they squeeze everything out of it they can.

I couldnt agree more about how bad an idea making fuel from your food source is. Whoever thought of that needs a kick in the butt. In addition to that though, you have very poorly regulated commodities speculation taking place.. high frequency traders are entering that arena as we speak. It's not looking good.

I understand your main point being about compromise, but sometimes what looks like compromise to one person, to another it's wholesale wreckage of their principles. Oh, and it's time to change your sig.

Anyway.. back to pics..

The sad thing is with the number of cows that are killed for meat we could put cow hide leather ( very durable ) on EVERTYHING. Instead to be politically correct we would rather throw out that perfectly good cowhide and drill for MORE oil for synthetic clothes, car seats, chair/couch material, etc, which in the end only endangers MORE wild animals. Sometimes I swear the modern activist like that is the best damn troll of all, just that they are unaware of that fact...

Prolly serious.

I am not a veggie myself but I am pretty sure that people who oppose the use of leather products etc. would probably prefer other organic alternatives (e.g. plant-based) over synthetic wherever possible.

Like I say, I am not a veggie but I'm deeply suspicious of the use of spurious logic to justify doing nothing whatsoever to change the status quo.
