September 4th, 2011. Gabe Newell was just locking up the Valve offices after having forgotten his companion cube plush the Friday prior.
"Aha, there you are Little Gabe," he sighed with relief, scooping the toy into his hands. "I couldn't last the long weekend without you!"
Walking through the offices, things seemed so serene. There were no animators charging down the halls, attempting to perfect the movements for the next big game. There was no clacking of programmer's keyboards, no flickering of screens or sipping of coffee. The turret in the main visitor's area stood silently, sapped by the still quiet; no Blu spies masquerading as visitors to punch holes in.
The tranquility was broken by a soft banging at the door and a muffled voice.
"What the, now who could that be?" Setting Little Gabe on the reception desk, Mr. Newell hurried to the door to see what the commotion was about.
"Oh, Mr. Newell, thank goodness you are here" the stranger wheezed breathlessly and in a thick accent.
"Take a seat my friend, please." Gabe guided the man inside. "Now, whats this all about?"
"Yes, my apologies sir. I've traveled far" The man collected himself, regaining his composure and began his purpose here. "My name is Alan Wilson, VP of Tripwire Interactive."
"Yes ys, I do believe I've heard it. What can I help you with?"
"Well, sir, we've been working hard on the beta for our new game Red Orchestra 2," Alan began, "and have been putting together the latest patch for our testers. We promised it to them a few days ago, but as with any software we ran into some issues..."
"Haha yes." Gabe chuckled, "I believe our fans refer to that as 'Valve Time'. So, whats the problem?"
"Well, we are distributing the beta and its patches through Steam. Unfortunately this software issue has pushed our schedule right into the middle of the holiday weekend," he explained. "Our forums are in total disarray. Fans are attacking one another over mindless issues, there are tons of repeat threads, and issues thoroughly explained simply return in other threads! Most of our moderators have fled the hopeless situation."
"Oh my," Gabe recoiled, feeling for this man and his dedicated, hardworking team. "Well, what does this have to do with your coming here?"
"Sir, we were wondering, if it is at all possible, that we could release the patch today." Alan produced a thumbdrive. "I have the files here, its a mere 1.1 gigs and shouldn't take long at all. Although..."
"Although?"
"Although we may need someone to stay, you know, in case we have to fix some major bugs with the latest patch."
Gabe sat back in his chair, considering the man's story. "Hmm. As you know," he started, "Valve is very commited to our customers."
"Yes sir, we at Tripwire follow a very similar doctrine!"
"Well as the head of this company I could not allow your fans, or your team, to continue on in chaos."
"Oh thank you sir thank you!" Alan jumped from his seat and grabbed Gabe's hand. "Really, we would appreciate it dearly!"
"Its my pleasure, Mr. Wilson. We'll have your patch up and running in no time. Excuse me for a second." Gabe pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number. "Lombardi, you're working through holiday weekend." There was a pause as he listened to the voice on the other end. "Bah, Tiny Tim and his ukelele shall go wanting!" Gabe slammed his phone shut and turned back to Alan. "Feel free to wait inside, he should be here shortly."
Gabe stopped short of the door and returned to the reception desk, and scooped up the plush. He stopped just short of the door once more, turned to Alan and said "good luck to you and your team, Mr. Wilson." He pushed open the door and disappeared out of sight.

Well, I had to do SOMETHING while the patch downloaded!
