I've only spent a little over 100 hrs on RO2, but I sank 1500+ on RO1. The highlight for me was running the WAR IS C3LL server and everyday speaking to people from all over the world, making tactics, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. It was the most rewarding multiplayer experience I've ever had.

I feel very jealous of those who've sunk a similar number of hours into RO2. Xmas is close by, so perhaps I'll get some more time during the holidays!

Best times, as a lone german rifleman on Pavlovs, holding the trench from C to B against russians. Last time I had already nine russians down (assault, sl mostly), when a russian got into the trench behind me and mowed me down.

C's the outhouse, right? That's not easy to see out of without getting hit.

The big change between RO1 and 2 for me is summarised in one word: Surviveability. It leads to incredible immersion, but also rage-quitting frustration at times. RO1 you can move around more freely because it's much harder to hit people.

RO2 on some of the urban maps has me so paranoid about popping my head up or moving 5 meters because you literally get whacked in seconds.

You really, really have to be careful with fields of fire in this game. It's utterly unforgiving. People don't miss.

It is kind of interesting how RO1 creates true firefights where it is actually hard to hit people and very rewarding when you do, almost entirely due to the fact that the graphics aren't that good.

In RO2, the graphics are much better, and then in Realism there is also far less weapon sway and recoil, making it possible to get unrealistically accurate with just a little bit of practice.

Ideally, I just want to see modes such as Classic become the standard, since it does a much better job of creating those firefights from RO1, while still having good graphics.

I've always thought the same. Seems everything is so much easier to shoot in 'modern' games, but perhaps the right game has just not come along yet.

In many ways I can see why TWI did it: CQB. it is the direction nearly everyone is going in - even ArmA3 has a much more fluid and precise movement mechanic compared to its predecessors. RO2 does work very well in this situation. The problem is - and I suspect it's the same for a number of RO1 players - I'm not very good at this kind of play.

RO1 was a rifleman's game, for the most part. Long sightlines and fairly open maps, even if they weren't actually that big (compare Barashka in RO1 with the remake - the original feels toytown sized). You could take your time and be methodical.

RO2 flipped this on its head. Most of the combat is at close quarters, the automatic weapon is king, and the player that favours the bolter has to figure out how best to play in this new environment.

I found it very, very frustrating at first, but with time - and slowly adapting - I've come to like it, even for its difficulty. Perhaps because of the difficulty.

People tell me RS has pretty much solved all of this - I just haven't had time to try those maps yet!

Hah, RS is even more automatic weapon based :p
It's not neccessarily a bad thing, though. RS is very enjoyable.

If you find a Server that has the bigger custom maps for RS. The stock maps are all Small / chokepointy-one-way yadda yadda ;)

By no means BAD. The jungle is just a very different beast and the custom maps are very diverse.

We will see how the game will play when everybody have either an auto or semi auto weapon in IC:V.

Speaking of IC:V - I hope they still have the Mosin - playing bolts against automatic weapons will add some challenge!

I hope they add the SKS too - even though it is a semi-automatic weapon, with a 10 round internal magazine and loads via stripper clips it'll be interesting seeing it up against the M16...

Damn you RO2 - you put me on a roller coaster of emotions last night. First I hit rock bottom after getting kicked from 3 servers in a row for reaching the TK limit - totally my fault :( I play MG class and had several team mates enter my field of fire. Despite my apologies I didn't get forgiven, and got kicked (rightly so).

I was annoyed at myself for being so irresponsible, so I joined another server and took rifleman class with axis on StalingradKessel. There I am defending against an excellent allied team when I notice a group of allies flanking us on the left. I moved to higher ground and started to try and repel them. I took down my first at around 100 meters - a level 99 Hero. "cool" I thought. Next shot, around 110 meters, another level 99 Hero - "what's the chances of that?". Next shot, around 90 meters, another level 99 Hero. By this point I'm beginning to get really worried, thinking I've bitten off more than I can chew. I line up another shot and manage to take out another level 99 Hero (around 80 meters) - 4 in a row . I can't ever remember taking out that many experienced players in a row. We won the round, but got beaten the next time, but that didn't matter to me I had a smile from ear to ear....

Damn you RO2, first you ***** slap me, then you give me that knowing look - that's why I love you so much....

Don't be so proud of yourself.

StalingradKessel is a terribly terribly badly designed axis biased map. Your experience exemplifies this with the ease at which you were able to kill Allied heros.

Do the same thing attacking as allies on this map and I will be impressed.

Awesome thread.

I've got about 4 hours under my belt so far, and this has been one of the best gaming experiences of my life.

The only other time I found myself so affected by a game was when I was playing DayZ when it first came out. Running into other players was intense. Like, stomach in throat, heart pounding in your ears intense.

Last night, I joined in the middle of a 64 player RO2 campaign, and my first match was on Apartments. It was my first time on the map, and I had absolutely no idea where the enemy was. I was totally disoriented the whole game, getting mowed down anytime I moved anywhere. Had a few super intense close-quarters fights, but felt like I had generally done nothing for the team.

We went on to play Bridges of Druzhina, which I had played one other time, so I felt okay going in. Got 37 kills as a rifleman, and a few really clutch captures. It was amazing, I really felt like I had played a significant role in the victory. And it was very definitely because of my SL, Ghost something. Wish I could remember his name...

Then, I found myself on a moonlit battlefield in a different squad with trenches and artillery craters (don't remember the name of the map). At one point, I found myself charging an objective with one friendly player in front of me, running through a trench directly into the tunnels where we'd been getting hosed from. Our new SL had popped a bunch of smoke, so it was zero visibility in the trenches, running full speed. For a split second, I had the I-can't-believe-I'm-here moment

What are you talking about? StalingradKessel is an awesome classic RO map, and it is in no way axis biased.

It may seem so if the allied team consists almost entirely of clueless beginners, but that has nothing to do with the map, that is just the usual team stacking.

The map is actually even easier to win as allies it in RO2 than in RO, on account of the fact that you can enter Assembly Hall through the small hole in the roof, making one of the most difficult chokepoints in RO, the other being the run for North Rail, entirely irrelevant.

hahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha yeah sure

In the last ~20 times I have played this map, I have literally never seen Allies even come close to winning. Always run out of time or reinforcements.

I played it twice last night. Allies won both rounds. Seems 50/50 on average.

You can discuss to 2022 about a map easy to win for Axis or Allies. Its a waste of time.

It simply depends the team your in and the server your on. Now if you join a server and play a map with total strangers or a load of new players. They won't use voip and not really interested to whats going on and they don't listen to any simple command given. On your way to the cap you see rifleman proned ten steps from a capzone while its ready to be lost.

Your experience will be a pain. This really excist believe me. I play this game and seen it so often. And its annoying.

While the same map with two teams cooperating using VoIP and players willing to listen to commands your experience wil be topnotch.

The best was a bayonet charge with 3 teammates to take over a building behind an objective at Saipan and thus allowing us to cut off Japanese reinforcements. Our team took the objective with minimal losses as a result.

The worst was when I shot a Japanese soldier on the knee and he later killed 7 teammates by running around with a pistol, I was death number 8. :(

Both top high and low point at the same time:

High: Getting to the radio at Basovka as Axis commander, and able to call in artillery on Russian approach, epic moment :D

Low: Getting kicked for teamkills right after, when the rest of the idiot team runs straight into own artillery after capping... :(
